Impact The Phillies had little reason not to give Moniak a brief audition in center field given the poor performances by the team's other options and the fact that the minor-league season hasn't started yet. He did very little with his opportunity, hitting .120/.214/.240 in nine games while striking out in 42.9 percent of his plate appearances. With the minor leagues starting soon, he'll get the chance to play every day at the Triple-A level, with Odubel Herrera getting the call to try to hold down the starting job in center.

Impact Making his third start in as many days against a right-handed pitcher, Moniak has seemingly supplanted Roman Quinn as the Phillies' top option in center field while Adam Haseley (personal) is on the restricted list. Considering that Moniak has gone hitless with eight strikeouts over his first 12 at-bats this season, he may need a strong showing at the plate Tuesday to ensure he sticks atop the depth chart. Impact With Adam Haseley sidelined indefinitely for personal reasons, Moniak could be set for a run of games in center. Roman Quinn should still see his fair share of action, but a player with a career .650 OPS over parts of five seasons shouldn't be too much of an obstacle for the 2016 first-overall pick. Plenty of shine has fallen off Moniak since his draft day following some mediocre minor-league performances, but he showed signs of life at the Double-A level in 2019, posting a 115 wRC+ while homering 11 times and stealing 15 bases. Expectations should remain modest for the 22-year-old for now, especially compared to what one might expect from most top draft picks, but it's certainly possible he's at least a deep-league contributor if he sees regular starts in center field.

Impact The competition for the job thinned out somewhat last week after Adam Haseley was diagnosed with a groin strain that's expected to sideline him for Opening Day. Moniak has a shaky track record at best, though that's true of fellow contestants Roman Quinn, Scott Kingery and Odubel Herrera as well. The Phillies don't want to harm Moniak's development by stashing him on the bench, but with the Triple-A season delayed until May they could decide that the best place for him to develop is on the big-league roster. If he remains hot throughout spring, it's possible he earns the chance to prove himself in April and gets sent down for his first taste of Triple-A action at the end of the month if he doesn't prove to be ready. Moniak's minor-league numbers don't indicate he'll be a great fantasy option if he does win a job, but he was the first-overall pick back in 2016 and is still just 22 years old, so it's far too early to write him off entirely.
