Quality start against Mariners Fiers allowed two runs on four hits and one walk over six innings in a no-decision against the Mariners on Saturday. He struck out three.
Impact Fiers was outdueled by Yusei Kikuchi, but he kept his team in it and the A's ultimately rallied against the Seattle bullpen to pull back to .500 on the young season. The right-hander gave up four runs in as many innings against Anaheim in his 2020 debut last week, with zero strikeouts. His strikeout rate had already been in steady decline, but the Oakland defense vacuums up a lot of that contact; Fiers outperformed the estimators by more than a full run last season. He lines up for a home start against the Rangers next week.

Impact Fiers was never in danger of taking the loss, as the Athletics spotted him a five-run lead in the first inning. The right-hander ended up using most of that advantage. The unimpressive start shouldn't be too much cause for concern. Fiers will make his second start of the year in Seattle on Saturday.

Fiers never produced a positive result himself, but he opted to take the cautious route. The 35-year-old's decision to throw consistently while play was paused is paying dividends however, as he doesn't feel he's far from building up to 100 pitches. "I'm just trying to stay within myself and just be myself," Fiers said. "I pride myself on throwing all my pitches for strikes and throwing them on any count and locating every pitch. That's how I pitch and what I do. I'm not trying to throw any harder, just locate my pitches."
