Yoshi Tsutsugo - Joining big-league clubTsutsugo's contract with the Pirates is a major-league one, and he'll join his new team for their series against the Dodgers, which begins Monday, Alex Stumpf of DKPittsburghSports...
ImpactWhether or not Tsutsugo will immediately enter the starting lineup remains to be seen, but he's likely to see a fair number of opportunities down the stretch. The 29-year-old has demonstrated a good eye in his 89 major-league games to date, walking at a 13.2 percent clip, but he hasn't done much else, striking out 29.4 percent of the time and hitting just eight homers to go with a .181/.291/.315 slash line. The Pirates are very much in audition mode, however, so he could get the chance to show what he can do at first base or in left field.

Ka'ai Tom - Activated and DFA'dThe Pirates activated Tom (back) from the 10-day injured list Monday and designated him for assignment, Mike Persak of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
ImpactTom will be cast off an organization's 40-man roster for the second time this season after the Athletics previously designated him for assignment in April. The Pirates subsequently claimed Tom off waivers and gave him a look in their outfield, but aside from breaking up a German Marquez no-hitter in late June, the 27-year-old provided few highlights between his two big-league stops. As an older prospect who posted a .510 OPS and struck out at a 27.1 percent clip in 133 big-league plate appearances, Tom may not fetch much interest as he heads back to the waiver wire. If that's the case, the Pirates would have to offer him back to Cleveland, the organization that held his rights before Oakland selected him in the Rule 5 draft last December.

David Bednar - Clean inning SundayBednar struck out one in a scoreless ninth inning of Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Brewers.
ImpactHe's appeared in only four games since the trade deadline's passed, allowing one earned run in 6.1 innings with two hits, one walk and eight strikeouts. Fellow high-leverage reliever Chris Stratton has struggled in August, allowing seven runs in four innings. For his part, Bednar's future remains bright and he projects as the team's closer heading into 2022.

Hoy Jun Park - Whiff in lone plate appearancePark struck out in a pinch-hitting appearance Sunday against Milwaukee.
ImpactAfter a red-hot start, the 25-year-old has cooled off with four hits in 23 at-bats. Park, who batted leadoff and started each of the team's last six games prior to Sunday, will continue to move around the diamond on defense, especially following the return of left fielder, Ben Gamel (hamstring). Park has shown the ability to go on a two-or-three game hitting binge, but pencilling him in for every day production might be a mistake at this stage of his career.

Rodolfo Castro - Rough go SundayCastro went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts in Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Brewers.
ImpactThe infielder is 6-for-36 with one double and 2:15 BB:K since Aug. 3. Castro remains one of the team's prospects, but there's a chance he could see time back in Indianapolis, considering he skipped Triple-A. The 22-year-old also made his third error Sunday on a play that led to Milwaukee's first run.
