Louie Varland - Remains winless Varland (0-5) took the loss Wednesday against the Royals, allowing three earned runs on eight hits and one walk in six innings. He struck out three.

Impact Optioned to Triple-A following Friday's start, Varland was recalled Wednesday to make his second start since June 16. The 26-year-old managed to notch his first quality start of the season, but he was fortunate to only surrender three runs. The right-hander allowed baserunners in all six innings he pitched while yielding solo home runs to Bobby Witt and Paul DeJong. Varland will continue to vie for the Twins fifth rotation spot with Joe Ryan and Chris Paddack sidelined, but his 6.14 ERA and 1.64 WHIP across 36.2 innings this season does not inspire confidence.

Impact Making his big-league debut Tuesday, Matthews displayed the impeccable control that was the hallmark of his rapid rise through the minors this year, firing 49 of 77 pitches for strikes while his offense staked him to a 5-0 lead by the end of the fourth inning. With Chris Paddack (forearm) not expected back until September and Joe Ryan (shoulder) potentially lost for the season, Minnesota has vacancies in its rotation, and Matthews has put together a strong claim for one of those open spots despite the fact that he began 2024 pitching for High-A Cedar Rapids. He lines up to make his next start for the Twins on the road early next week in San Diego.

Byron Buxton - Out Wednesday with right hip injury Buxton (hip) is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Royals.

Impact Buxton exited the series opener Monday with right hip discomfort and will remain on the bench for the second day in a row as the Twins and Royals wrap up their three-game set. On a positive note, imaging on Buxton's hip returned negative, so the Twins are seemingly viewing him as day-to-day and are hopeful that he'll avoid a stint on the injured list. Austin Martin will cover center field Wednesday in Buxton's stead.

Josh Winder - Heads back to Triple-A The Twins optioned Winder to Triple-A St. Paul on Wednesday.

Impact He'll exit the active roster to clear a spot for right-hander Louie Varland, who was recalled from Triple-A in advance of his start Wednesday versus the Royals. Winder made three appearances out of the Minnesota bullpen during his latest stint in the big leagues, striking out eight batters over seven scoreless innings.

Justin Topa - MRI shows elbow inflammation An MRI on Topa's right elbow showed inflammation, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.

Impact Topa had his minor league rehab assignment shut down Saturday after experiencing tightness in his right arm. The right-hander has been on assignment since July 23 as part of his recovery from a tear in the patellar tendon of his left knee. He's yet to make his 2024 major league debut. Topa says he shouldn't be out too long, but it's not clear he'll even be able to return this season.
