Impact Duran struck out the first two batters on just seven pitches. He'd give up a two-out single to Will Brennan before rebounding to punch out Brayan Rocchio, closing out the Twins' two-run victory. Bailey Ober - Dominant again in 12th win Ober (12-5) earned the win in the first game of Friday's doubleheader with the Guardians, allowing two hits and two walks over six scoreless innings. He struck out nine.

Impact It's the ninth straight quality start for Ober, who's posted a stellar 1.76 ERA in that span (61.1 innings) while logging eight or more strikeouts in six of those outings. The 29-year-old Ober's ERA is down to 3.52 on the year with a 0.97 WHIP and 137:31 K:BB across 128 innings. He'll look to keep rolling in his next start, currently scheduled for next week at home against the Royals.

Impact It's telling that the Twins have not activated Topa from the injured list despite several injuries on the pitching staff in the past week. Topa hasn't pitched in the majors this season due to a small tear in the patellar tendon of his left knee which required a platelet-rich plasma injection in mid-May. He started a rehab assignment July 23. It's not clear how much longer he'll need at Triple-A or what kind of progress he'll need to show to be activated from the injured list.

Impact Plutko had a 4.35 ERA in 12 starts and 60 IP at St. Paul with a 7.3 K/9. While his stats were not overwhelming, the Twins can't afford to lose depth after several injuries in the majors.

Impact Paddack has missed the last three weeks of action with a right forearm strain. It's going to take him a little while to get built back up, so a return before the end of August doesn't seem terribly likely. However, Falvey expressed optimism Friday that Paddack would be able to rejoin the Twins' rotation at some point later this season.

Luke Keaschall - Undergoing Tommy John surgery Keaschall will soon undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow, Bobby Nightengale of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

Impact Keaschall has battled elbow problems for much of the season, although it hasn't affected his production, with the 21-year-old slashing .303/.420/.483 with 15 homers and 23 stolen bases between High-A Cedar Rapids and Double-A Wichita. Because he's a position player, having the surgery now will give Keaschall a shot to be ready in time for spring training. Assuming health, Keaschall should push to debut for the Twins in 2025.

Louie Varland - Recalled from Triple-A The Twins recalled Varland from Triple-A St. Paul on Friday, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.

Impact Varland will officially serve as the 27th man during Friday's doubleheader versus the Guardians and is slated to start the second game. While Varland is likely to be sent back down after the outing, he'll likely be needed again soon with Joe Ryan (shoulder) landing on the injured list and expected to miss considerable time. Varland holds a 6.58 ERA over 26 frames with the Twins this season but has pitched well of late at St. Paul with a 1.19 ERA and 27:9 K:BB over 22.2 innings.

Brooks Lee - Lands on IL with biceps tendinitis The Twins placed Lee on the 10-day injured list Friday with right biceps tendinitis, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.

Impact Lee recently missed some time with what had been referred to as right shoulder soreness, but there's now a different diagnosis and it's an injury bad enough to sideline him at least for the next 10 days. The rookie had seen most of his playing time of late at shortstop while Carlos Correa (heel) was out, but that job now should go to Willi Castro, with Austin Martin and Kyle Farmer mixing in at second base.

Scott Blewett - Contract selected by Minnesota The Twins selected Blewett's contract from Triple-A St. Paul on Friday, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.

Impact The right-hander joined Minnesota on a minor-league deal during the offseason, and he's now on the cusp of his first big-league appearance since 2021. Blewett has made 37 appearances with St. Paul and has a 3.52 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 54:17 K:BB across 53.2 innings.

Impact There's no word yet on what the MRI taken on Ryan's right triceps on Thursday showed, but the club appears slated to be without the hurler at least for the next couple weeks. Ryan had to be removed from his last outing Wednesday versus the Cubs in the third inning after his triceps tightened up on him. More clarity on Ryan's situation should be available soon.

Brock Stewart - Season-ending shoulder surgery Stewart will undergo arthroscopic right shoulder surgery on Tuesday and is expected to be sidelined for 5-to-6 months, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.

Impact Stewart has been limited to just 16 appearances this season because of nagging shoulder problems. If there's a silver lining is that it's only a cleanup procedure and the hope is that he'll be ready in time for spring training. That said, Stewart will turn 33 in October and has missed considerable time over the last several years with arm issues, so it's no given he'll be as effective after coming back. He holds a 2.28 ERA and 59:19 K:BB over 43.1 frames for the Twins since the beginning of the 2023.
