LEADING OFF: Heaney takes hill for Yankees, ex-Cubs slugging

Two pitchers traded at the deadline make their first starts on new teams Monday
AUGUST 2, 2021ASSOCIATED PRESS
Luke Voit - Rehab assignment coming this weekYankees general manager Brian Cashman said during an appearance on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM that Voit (knee) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on...
ImpactVoit is in the midst of his third stint on the injured list this season, this time due to a bone bruise and inflammation in his left knee. Though Voit could be tracking toward a return from the IL by next weekend or the week after, the Yankees don't appear to be counting on him reclaiming an everyday role at first base, after the team shipped out two highly regarded prospects to the Cubs on Thursday to acquire Anthony Rizzo. With Rizzo off to a red-hot start to his tenure with the Yankees and with Giancarlo Stanton locked in as the team's regular designated hitter, Voit may need one of the two to miss time with an injury before regaining meaningful at-bats.

Andrew Heaney - First start coming MondayHeaney is scheduled to start in his Yankees debut Monday against the Orioles in New York, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports.
ImpactRather than making a big swing to upgrade their rotation ahead of the trade deadline, the Yankees opted for a buy-low move with the addition of Heaney, who turned in a solid 20.4 K-BB% but a less palatable 5.27 ERA and 1.31 WHIP over 18 starts with the Angels. Though most of his peripherals point to some likely improvement in his ERA, Heaney has been bit hard by the long ball (1.5 HR/9) this season, and Yankee Stadium won't be the most favorable environment for him to make progress on that front.

Magneuris Sierra - Swipes bag in lossSierra went 0-for-3 with a stolen base in Sunday's 3-1 loss to the Yankees.
ImpactThe outfielder got aboard on a fielder's choice and stole second in the fifth inning, but he was left on base. Sierra projects for an everyday role with Miami after the team traded away two of its starting outfielders. The 25-year-old has a .240/.292/.273 slash line with six steals, one RBI and 19 runs scored through 161 plate appearances, although he's often worked out of a bench role rather than receiving regular playing time. He has yet to hit his first big-league home run despite playing in parts of five seasons.

Anthony Bass - Charged with loss SundayBass (1-6) allowed two runs (one earned) on one hit and struck out the only batter he retired as he took the loss versus the Yankees on Sunday.
ImpactThe right-hander allowed two of the three batters he faced in the eighth inning to get on base, and Richard Bleier proceeded to allow both inherited runners to score. The loss was Bass's first since July 9, when he worked as an opener. The 33-year-old hadn't given up a run in 6.1 innings since that appearance prior to Sunday. He has a 3.79 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 38:17 K:BB with 12 holds and four blown saves in 47 appearances, but he could be in the mix for saves after Yimi Garcia was traded to Houston.

Sandy Alcantara - Whiffs 10 in no-decisionAlcantara allowed two hits and a walk while striking out 10 over seven innings in a no-decision versus the Yankees on Sunday.
ImpactThe 25-year-old put together a stellar performance in the series finale -- arguably his best of the year -- but Anthony Bass and Richard Bleier wasted it by combining to allow a pair of runs in the eighth inning. Alcantara lowered his ERA to 3.12 with a 1.12 WHIP and 120:39 K:BB through 132.2 innings across 22 starts. The right-hander projects for a risky start in Colorado next week.
