Impact It was a rather gloomy Opening Day in Cincinnati, but Castellanos provided a bright spot with his performance. He already has his first two extra-base hits of the campaign, and given his track record, there's good reason to think Castellanos' rate stats will improve over a larger sample this season.

Impact The 29-year-old was scratched earlier this week with a sore right middle finger, but he'll return to the lineup after resting for a couple days. Castellanos shouldn't have any issues being ready for the start of the regular season, barring a setback.

Impact The injury doesn't sound like a particularly serious one, but the Reds have little reason not to be cautious with one of their top hitters with Opening Day still nearly a month away. Barring further complications, Castellanos should still have plenty of time to get up to speed by the start of the regular season. TJ Friedl will replace him in right field Tuesday, though it would likely be Aristides Aquino or Shogo Akiyama who would see a larger role if Castellanos winds up missing time during the season.

Impact Despite being in the 97th percentile in barrels, 83rd percentile in hard-hit percentage and 82nd percentile in exit velocity, Castellanos managed just a .257 batting average on balls in play. That explains some of his struggles, but not all. He also struck out a career-high 28.5 percent of the time, up from 21.5 percent the previous season. There should be some correction in his BABIP, but unless Castellanos' strikeout rate corrects back to career norms, his batting average will be a significant risk.

Impact Castellanos played all 60 games during his first season with the Reds in 2020, recording a .784 OPS with 14 home runs and 34 RBI. He has opt-out clauses in his contract following the 2020 and 2021 seasons, and it's relatively unsurprising to see him remain with the Reds for a second season since teams could have less financial flexibility following the abbreviated 2020 season.
