Shows improvement in second start Lodolo (0-2) took the loss against San Diego on Monday, pitching five innings and allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out eight.
Impact Lodolo has lost each of his first two big-league starts, but he showed some improvement in his second appearance Monday. The left-hander went one inning deeper and exited having given up fewer hits, runs and walks while doubling his strikeout total from four to eight in comparison to his big-league debut. Lodolo also threw 18 first-pitch strikes (to 23 batters) and registered 16 swings-and-misses Monday. He'll try to grab his elusive first win in his next start, which is tentatively slated to come at home against St. Louis on Sunday.

Struggles in MLB debut Lodolo (0-1) pitched four innings, surrendering five runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out four in a loss versus the Guardians on Wednesday.
Impact The 24-year-old struggled in his major-league debut, allowing 10 batters to reach base in four innings on the mound. Lodolo unraveled in the second inning, walking three batters while hitting two others, ultimately giving up two runs in the inning without allowing a hit. He later gave up homers to Owen Miller and Jose Ramirez, the later of which was a two-run shot. Lodolo's claim to fame in the minor-leagues was his ability to strike out 38.8 percent of the batters he faced in 2021, but he only struck out four of the 24 batters he faced Wednesday. The rookie's next shot on the mound is expected to come Monday on the road against the Padres.

Called up from minors The Reds officially selected Lodolo's contract from Triple-A Louisville on Wednesday.
Impact Cincinnati already confirmed a day ago that Lodolo would pick up the start in Wednesday's series finale with the Guardians, but the team didn't formally activate him until the day of the game. Riley O'Brien was designated for assignment to create room on the 40-man roster for Lodolo, who should be guaranteed a rotation spot until at least one of Luis Castillo (shoulder) or Mike Minor (shoulder) return from the injured list. After a brilliant 2021 campaign between Double-A Chattanooga and Louisville in which Lodolo compiled a 2.31 ERA and 0.97 WHIP while striking out 38.8 percent of the batters he faced across 50.2 innings, it's not out of the question for the young lefty to perform well enough to permanently stay with the big club even after both Castillo and Minor return.
