Impact Making his first big-league appearance since 2017, Martinez struggled with traffic on the bases in the first three innings but only permitted a single run and rebounded to retire eight of the final nine batters he faced. Impact Mike Clevinger's (knee) placement on the injured list coupled with Thursday's trade that sent Chris Paddack to Minnesota cleared the way for Nick Martinez to open the season as the Padres' No. 5 starter. Even before Paddack was dealt, Martinez appeared in good shape to win a rotation spot after San Diego signed him to a four-year, $25.5 million deal in the offseason. The 31-year-old owns a 4.77 ERA across 415.1 career innings in the majors from 2014 through 2017, but he looked like a different pitcher while spending the subsequent four seasons in Japan. During his time overseas, the right-hander gained a few ticks of velocity on his fastball, showed an improved four-pitch mix and made major gains in limiting walks. Of course, Martinez will be facing higher-caliber competition in his return to MLB than he matched up against in Nippon Professional Baseball, but he at least appears better equipped to find more success this time around.

Competing for starting role Martinez will compete for a spot in the Padres' rotation during spring training, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

The right-hander posted a 1.62 ERA in 23 starts in Japan last season, but he has been less successful in the major leagues, registering a 4.77 ERA and 1.45 WHIP across 415.1 career innings. Impact Back on Dec. 1, San Diego was able to lure Martinez away from Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball following his excellent four-year run overseas, but the two sides were unable to finalize the deal due to the MLB lockout going to effect shortly after the agreement was reached. Now that the lockout has ended, Martinez finally put pen to paper on a uniquely structured deal. He'll take home $6 million in 2021 through a $4 million salary and a $2 million signing bonus, and he'll hold a $6.5 million player option for each of the subsequent three years. His contract also contains a $1 million base-salary escalator in each year that he makes at least 20 starts.
