Likely to return Friday Manager David Ross said Hoerner (forearm) remains on track to return from the 10-day injured list when first eligible Friday, Gordon Wittenmyer of NBC Sports Chicago reports.
Impact Hoerner was shut down last week after he sustained a minor left forearm strain in a collision with teammate Ian Happ (ribs) in a May 2 game against the Reds. At this point, Hoerner is further along in his recovery from his injury than Happ, who isn't in line to be activated this weekend. Assuming Hoerner is in fact good to go for Friday's series opener in Detroit, he should reclaim an everyday role at second base immediately.

Though Hoerner wasn't forced to exit Sunday's loss to the Reds after colliding with teammate Ian Happ, the Cubs apparently sent him for follow-up tests that revealed the forearm injury. Given that the injury is to his non-throwing arm, Hoerner will likely face a shorter recovery timeline than what might normally be associated with a forearm strain. Since his late-April call-up, Hoerner appeared to have seized hold of an everyday role in the infield by slashing .389/.500/.556 with three stolen bases over his first 11 games. Hoerner's move to the IL likely reopens regular duties at the keystone for David Bote.

His performance is forcing the Cubs to keep him in the lineup, so he should be the primary second baseman, at least until he cools off at the plate. David Bote figures to occupy more of a utility role and Eric Sogard will work as a reserve as well, and both players will have limited fantasy appeal as long as Hoerner is playing regularly.
