Drew Waters - No lock to make big-league rosterWaters could be assigned to Triple-A Omaha if he doesn't win a starting job in spring training, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
ImpactWaters' development is still important, and consistent at-bats with Omaha would serve him better than acting as a fourth outfield. The addition of Hunter Renfroe took Waters' starting job away, and Kyle Isbel's defense has made him the favorite for center field. If Waters ends up in the minors to begin 2024, Dairon Blanco is projected to be the Royals' fourth outfielder.

Maikel Garcia - Could be leadoff hitterGarcia is projected as the Royals' starting third baseman and a potential leadoff hitter, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
ImpactGarcia has gone 4-for-9 with a stolen base over his first three Cactus League games. He enjoyed a solid first major-league campaign, batting .272 with a .681 OPS while adding 23 stolen bases, 50 RBI and 59 runs scored. The Royals' lineup looks a little beefed up compared to 2023, and another year of growth from the prospects could help Garcia be a valuable contact hitter and speed threat if he can remain atop the lineup.

Freddy Fermin - Projected as backup catcherFermin is projected to be the Royals' backup catcher to begin 2024, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.
ImpactThe Royals recently signed Austin Nola, but he's viewed as an experienced depth option. Fermin has gone 1-for-4 with a walk and a strikeout over two Cactus League games. With Salvador Perez in the latter half of his career, it wouldn't be surprising to see Fermin shoulder more of the workload behind the dish, which could see Perez take more games at first base or designated hitter.
