Sim game slated for this weekMontas, who is still ramping up to his Cactus League debut after returning from COVID-19, is scheduled to pitch in a simulated game sometime this week, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com r...
ImpactThe right-hander was able to throw a bullpen session Saturday without setbacks, setting up the opportunity to face live hitters. Montas has reported some mild residual breathing issues from his recent illness, but he's considered to be very close to full health at this point.

Slugs two-run blastPena belted a two-run homer in his lone at-bat during Monday's Cactus League loss to the Royals.
ImpactA non-roster invitee operating under a split 2021 contract, Pena appears very likely to open the season at Triple-A Las Vegas with Aramis Garcia and Austin Allen ahead of him in the backstop pecking order behind starter Sean Murphy (chest). However, the 31-year-old, who boasts 85 games of big-league experience, could potentially log some time in the majors in the coming season, especially if he's able to produce gaudy offensive numbers in the typically hitter-friendly environment of the Pacific Coast League.

Batting second in spring debutLowrie will man second base and bat second Tuesday in the Athletics' Cactus League game against the Cubs, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ImpactAs was initially reported Monday, Lowrie will check into the lineup Tuesday for his spring debut and his first game action since Sept, 29, 2019. In the year and a half in between, Lowrie has battled numerous lower-body injuries, but the 36-year-old reported to Athletics camp healthy and should be in good position to win a bench role with Oakland if he can avoid any setbacks this spring. The switch-hitting Lowrie could make sense as a short-side platoon mate at second base with the lefty-hitting Tony Kemp.

Sim games scheduledPuk will throw in simulated games Tuesday and Saturday and should get into Cactus League action soon after that, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ImpactThe Athletics are treating Puk with extreme caution, a sensible plan given that injuries have limited him to just 36.2 innings over the last three years combined. Shoulder issues wiped out the entirety of his 2020 campaign. He's expected to open the year in the bullpen as the team looks to manage his workload.

Resumes throwingRosenthal (groin) will resume throwing Tuesday and could be back on a mound by the end of the week, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
ImpactRosenthal had been shut down for two days, but his groin strain doesn't appear to be particularly worrisome. The fact that he's already throwing again bodes very well for his readiness for Opening Day, though the Athletics will likely remain cautious with him for now to avoid setbacks.
