Orelvis Martinez - Bound for Double-ABlue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said Sunday that Martinez will likely open the upcoming season at Double-A New Hampshire, Hazel Mae of Sportsnet reports.
ImpactFollowing his early-August call-up from Low-A Dunedin, Martinez produced at a roughly league-average level in his 27 games at High-A Vancouver last season with a .214/.282/.491 slash line (99 wRC+). A return to Vancouver to begin the 2022 campaign wouldn't have been unexpected for the 20-year-old, but the Blue Jays may have been encouraged enough with how he looked during his workouts at big-league camp earlier this spring to hand him the Double-A assignment. The Blue Jays haven't settled on a permanent defensive home for Martinez, but his prodigious power should play at nearly any spot.

ImpactSherriff is scheduled to play catch Monday and isn't being ruled out from making the Opening Day roster, but he may be running out of time to prove his health in advance of the Phillies' first regular-season game next Friday against Oakland. ImpactRomano recently suffered a mild ankle sprain when he slipped while walking his dog, but he missed only a day of workouts before he was able to get back on the mound Friday. After completing a bullpen session without incident, Romano will face hitters Sunday, which seemingly clears up any concern about his availability for Opening Day. Manager Charlie Montoyo has yet to formally name a closer ahead of Opening Day, but Romano looks like the best bet for saves out of the Toronto bullpen after posting a 2.14 ERA while converting 23 of his 24 save chances in 2021.
