Jake Woodford - Promoted ahead of start The Pirates selected Woodford's contract from Triple-A Indianapolis to start Wednesday's game against the Cardinals, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact The right-hander was sent outright to Indianapolis in late August after being designated for assignment by Pittsburgh, but he'll rejoin the big club for a spot start Wednesday in St. Louis. Woodford has an 8.01 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 21:9 K:BB across 30.1 frames in the majors this season, so he doesn't offer much streaming appeal.

Kyle Nicolas - Lands on IL The Pirates placed Nicolas (side) on the 15-day injured list Wednesday, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Impact With only 11 days left in the season and Pittsburgh out of the running for a wild-card spot, Nicolas' move to the IL will put an early end to his 2024 campaign. The 25-year-old righty will finish the year with a 3.95 ERA and 1.50 WHIP alongside a 55:31 K:BB across 54.2 innings. Jake Woodford was selected to the active roster in a corresponding move and will start Wednesday's game versus St. Louis.

Impact Heller initially landed on the injured list at the end of August with right shoulder inflammation, and his move to the 60-day IL will officially make him ineligible to return before the end of the season. Impact Yorke went 0-for-3 with a stolen base in his major-league debut Monday. It didn't take him long to check off another first, as he had three singles in his second career game. The contact-oriented infielder should continue to get steady playing time down the stretch as the Pirates evaluate his major-league readiness for 2025. Yorke has started both of his big-league contests at second base, which could lead to Nick Gonzales being forced to share shortstop with Isiah Kiner-Falefa to finish the year.
