Merrill leads Padres against the Pirates after 4-hit outing

Andrew McCutchen - Belts homer in loss McCutchen went 2-for-5 with a home run, a walk and three RBI in an extra-inning loss to San Diego on Wednesday.
Impact McCutchen tallied all of his RBI in the middle innings, swatting a solo homer in the fourth frame and adding a two-run single in the sixth. The long ball snapped a 13-game homerless stretch for the veteran outfielder, though he's nonetheless managed to already top last year's home-run total with 14 through 419 plate appearances. McCutchen went deep just 12 times over 473 plate appearances in his return to Pittsburgh last season.

David Bednar - Blows save Wednesday Bednar blew a save opportunity against the Padres on Wednesday, giving up one run on one hit and one walk while striking out one batter over one inning.
Impact Bednar entered in the top of the ninth frame with the Pirates clinging to a one-run lead. He retired one batter before Jackson Merrill knotted the score with a solo shot to center field. Bednar then got into more trouble with a hit-by-pitch and a walk, but he was able to bounce back with consecutive outs to send the game into an extra inning. The blown save was his first since April 9 and just his third in 23 chances this season. That's a perfectly acceptable save percentage, but Bednar hasn't been as sharp this year as in seasons past, as evidenced by his 5.17 ERA and 1.23 WHIP through 38.1 innings.

Marco Gonzales - Struggles again Wednesday Gonzales allowed five runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out three batters over 4.2 innings in a no-decision against San Diego on Wednesday.
Impact Gonzales was staked to a 2-0 lead after the first inning but couldn't hold it. He gave up a solo shot to Jackson Merrill in the second frame and a three-run blast to Kyle Higashioka in the fourth, then was pulled with one out in the fifth after surrendering a go-ahead single to Merrill. It was Gonzales' third straight start of fewer than five innings, and he's posted an ugly 8.49 ERA and 2.31 WHIP during that span.

Impact Gonzales landed on the 10-day injured list in late July with a left groin strain but is almost ready to test things out in game action. Since he's been out of commission for less than two weeks, the infielder shouldn't need too many rehab appearances before being activated. Gonzales isn't a given to regain his spot at the top of the Pirates' depth chart at second base after the club acquired Isiah Kiner-Falefa at the trade deadline.

Bailey Falter - Goes two innings before rain delay Falter didn't factor into the decision Tuesday against the Padres, allowing two hits while striking out one over two scoreless innings.
Impact Falter allowed just a pair of singles Tuesday before the game entered a nearly three-hour rain delay, forcing Pittsburgh to turn to the bullpen to start the third inning. Falter's been solid for the Pirates this year, going 5-7 with a 3.87 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 65:28 K:BB across 19 starts (97.2 innings). The left-hander is currently slated to make his next start this weekend on the road against the Dodgers.

Joshua Palacios - Starting rehab assignment Palacios (hamstring) is headed to Triple-A Indianapolis to begin a rehab assignment, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.
Impact Palacios has been shelved for the last week with a left hamstring strain. Because his absence has been brief, it would seem he has a shot to be activated from the 10-day injured list when first eligible on Aug. 10. Palacios had been seeing regular reps in right field against right-handers before getting injured, but he could return as a backup following the Pirates' acquisition of Bryan De La Cruz.

Jared Jones - Cleared for rehab assignment Jones (lat) has been sent to Triple-A Indianapolis to begin a rehab assignment, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.
Impact His first rehab start, while not yet confirmed, is expected to come Thursday. Jones has missed more than a month of action with a Grade 2 right lat strain, so he'll surely require multiple rehab outings before rejoining the Pirates' rotation. A return before the end of August for the 23-year-old, assuming everything goes well, appears likely.
