Bryse Wilson - Clinches rotation spotWilson secured a spot in the Pirates' Opening Day rotation and is scheduled to make his first start of the season Sunday in St. Louis, Alex Stumpf of DKPittsburghSports.com reports...
ImpactWilson emerged from the Grapefruit League season with a 6.94 ERA and seven walks allowed over 11.2 innings, but he at least excelled at making bats miss by racking up 16 strikeouts. After Wilson posted a lowly 14.3 percent strikeout rate over 100.2 big-league innings between Atlanta and Pittsburgh in 2021, the limited spring sample offers some encouragement that the 24-year-old might be able to take a big step forward in that area. Even if the uptick in strikeouts carries over to the regular season, Wilson will still need to curb both his walks and home runs allowed before he emerges as a usable option in most mixed leagues.

Mitch Keller - Wins rotation spotKeller secured a spot in the Pirates' Opening Day rotation and is scheduled to make his first start of the season Saturday in St. Louis, Alex Stumpf of DKPittsburghSports.com repor...
ImpactKeller appeared to be on strong footing for a rotation spot heading into the spring, but he solidified his spot after submitting a 2.92 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 12:3 K:BB across 12.1 innings over his four starts. Though Keller's results weren't eye-popping on the surface, he and the Pirates are optimistic he can take a step forward in 2022 after he tinkered with his repertoire over the winter to incorporate a new-look slider featuring more horizontal break, according to Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic. The refined slider could emerge as a much-needed reliable breaking pitch to his upper-90s fastball, as Keller has thus far struggled to find a consistent secondary offering to complement the heater during his time in the majors.

Cole Tucker - Doubles in lossTucker went 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored in a 5-1 loss Tuesday against the Phillies.
ImpactTucker doubled and scored in the third inning off Zach Eflin. The 25-year-old batted ninth and started in right field for Pittsburgh. Serving in a utility role, Tucker has appeared at shortstop, second base and all three outfield positions during Grapefruit League play. The former first-round pick had an impressive spring, batting .297/.350/.568 with two home runs in 12 games. Tucker batted leadoff in the majority of his spring games and could find himself in that role early in the season if he continues to produce.

Roberto Pérez - Hitless in lossPerez went 0-for-2 with a strikeout in a 5-1 loss Tuesday against Philadelphia.
ImpactBatting eighth in the lineup, Perez grounded out and struck out before being replaced by Taylor Davis. The Pirates signed the 33-year-old backstop to a one-year, $5 million contract to serve as their primary catcher following the trade of Jacob Stallings. A career .206 hitter, Perez slashed just .192/.267/.346 with one home run in 11 spring games. While he should get the majority of playing time behind the plate for Pittsburgh, he'll likely be a bottom-of-the-order, low-producing hitter.

Bryan Reynolds - Two hits in lossReynolds went 2-for-3 with a RBI in a 5-1 loss Tuesday versus Philadelphia.
ImpactReynolds started in center field and singled in his first two plate appearances against Zach Eflin. The 27-year-old crushed opposing pitching all spring and wrapped up the preseason with a .361/.368/.750 batting line and three home runs in 12 games. The 2021 All-Star never hit lower than third in the batting order in 2021 and has hit second in every spring training game this season. As long as he's a Pirate, he will likely be at the top of the order.

Mickey Moniak - Dealing with bruised handMoniak suffered a bruised right hand in Wednesday's spring game against the Rays, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.
ImpactMoniak was hit on the right hand when he struck out in the top of the fourth inning Wednesday, and he didn't return to the game. He underwent X-rays that came back negative, but it's not yet clear whether the issue will impact his availability to begin the regular season. If Moniak is forced to miss time, Matt Vierling would likely serve as the primary center fielder.
