Gregory Polanco - Remains in lineupPolanco, who was placed on outright waivers Sunday, remains on the active roster and will bat sixth and play right field Monday against Arizona.
ImpactIn an unusual situation, Polanco was waived but remains with the team. The Pirates reportedly wanted to give him the chance to play for a contender if he gets claimed but do not intend to let him go otherwise. Given that he's hit just .199/.278/.343 on the season, it would be a surprise if a contender shows any interest in him.

Anthony Alford - Officially activatedAlford (back) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Monday, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic
ImpactAlford was sidelined with a lower-back strain, but he'll return to the Pirates after a minimal stay on the 10-day IL. The 27-year-old should mainly start against left-handed pitchers, while Ben Gamel will likely fill the strong side of a platoon in left field.

Michael Chavis - Recalled by PiratesChavis will be recalled by the Pirates ahead of Monday's game against the Diamondbacks, Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic
ImpactChavis was traded from the Red Sox to the Pirates at the end of July, and he slashed .246/.316/.536 with five home runs, five doubles, 12 runs, 12 RBI and a stolen base across 17 games at Triple-A Indianapolis. The 26-year-old will start at second base in Monday's series opener against Arizona.

Nick Plummer - Promoted to Triple-AThe Cardinals promoted Plummer from Double-A Springfield to Triple-A Memphis on Monday.
ImpactSt. Louis determined Plummer was ready for a tougher test after he smacked two home runs Sunday in his final game at Double-A, bringing his slash line up to .283/.404/.489 across 376 plate appearances with Springfield on the season. The 25-year-old outfielder boasts an intriguing combination of power and on-base skills, but his ability to cut down his strikeout rate (28.7 percent at Double-A) will be essentially to him finding consistent success at Triple-A, and eventually, the majors.

Bryan Reynolds - Dog days of summerReynolds went 1-for-4 in Sunday's 3-0 loss to the Cardinals on Sunday.
ImpactHe cooled off a bit last week, going 7-for-26 with two doubles in his last eight contests. Reynolds, who is a combined 7-for-47 against three of four upcoming St. Louis starters this week, has played in 121 of 124 games thus far. He slumped in September as a rookie and the Pirates may decide to sit him a bit more frequently going forward. Still, he's having a tremendous year on a last-place team, slashing .304/.387/.525 with 21 homers and 72 RBI.

Alex Reyes - Earns save SundayReyes earned the save Sunday against the Pirates after tossing a scoreless inning, allowing two hits and fanning one.
ImpactReyes found himself with runners on first and second with two outs after allowing back-to-back singles to Ke'Bryan Hayes and Bryan Reynolds, but he closed the door after retiring Colin Moran on a line to right field. The hard-throwing reliever, who tossed 10 of his 13 pitches for strikes in this outing, snapped a short run of two games allowing earned runs, and he now has 28 saves out of 30 opportunities. He owns a 2.43 ERA across 55.2 innings in his first year as the Cardinals' full-time closer.
