Prior to his injury, the 25-year-old rookie put up a 3.93 ERA and 1.19 WHIP across 50.1 innings in the bigs, and he'll most likely work in middle relief now that he's healthy again. Mason Black was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

Resumes mound work Rodriguez (elbow) threw 30-pitch bullpen sessions at Oracle Park on Thursday and Sunday, MLB.com reports.

Impact After being placed on the 15-day injured list Aug. 15 with a right elbow flexor strain, Rodriguez was shut down for two weeks before he was cleared to begin a throwing program Sept. 3. He looks to be building up his pitch count through side sessions and should soon be ready to face hitters before likely heading out on a brief minor-league rehab assignment. Rodriguez could make it back from the IL during the final week of the regular season.

Facing multi-week shutdown Giants manager Bob Melvin said Sunday that Rodriguez (elbow) will be shut down from throwing for at least a couple weeks, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Impact Rodriguez will be eligible to return before the end of the month, but given the nature of the injury it's difficult to say at this point whether he has a chance to be ready by that date. Spencer Bivens has been recalled in a corresponding move.

He's given up 11 runs over 14.1 innings in June, but he has a 15:4 K:BB in that span that suggests he's got a skill set that can keep him in the majors. For the year, he's at a 4.70 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 36:11 K:BB over 30.2 innings through 19 appearances. With the Giants' rotation unlikely to gain reinforcements until July, Rodriguez may see a few more opener assignments over the next couple of weeks if manager Bob Melvin opts to protect the pitchers the team has called up to plug holes.
