Sent down following matinee Contreras was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis following the first game of Thursday's doubleheader against the Reds.

Impact Contreras picked up his third win of the season during Thursday's matinee by allowing a run on four hits and a walk while striking out seven in six innings. However, he'll head back to the minors after left-hander Eric Stout was recalled to provide an extra arm in the bullpen during the nightcap. Contreras has performed relatively well during his major-league tenure this year, so it seems likely that he'll be back with the Pirates soon.

His final pitch of the outing resulted in a three-run shot by Rowdy Tellez. Over his last five starts, the right-handed rookie has posted a brutal 6.53 ERA with a 17:13 K:BB. Contreras' season ERA is up to 4.09; it's the highest his ERA has been since he allowed two runs out of the bullpen in his season debut. The 22-year-old is projected to start in Cincinnati next week.

Impact Contreras struggled with his control in the second inning and walked four batters, including one with the bases loaded. He pitched around trouble the rest of the way and held the Rays scoreless over the final three frames. Sunday's start was fairly representative of Contreras' season as the 22-year-old limited runs while pitching around walks. For the season he has a 2.76 ERA despite a 1.35 WHIP and 42:19 K:BB in 42.1 innings. His next start will likely be next weekend against Milwaukee.
