Two hits, early exit Monday Cano came out of Monday's game against the Braves with the Mets up 7-1 in the fifth inning, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports.

Impact There are no reports of Cano suffering a visible injury. He was 2-for-2 with a walk and three RBI prior to being replaced at second base by Brian Dozier. It's possible this was just a way to get the veteran a little rest in a game the Mets were winning comfortably. Dozier has rated as a slightly better defender than Cano in recent seasons.

Hot streak continues Cano went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI in Saturday's 7-1 loss to Atlanta.

Impact The 37-year-old has turned back the clock with a five-game hitting streak during which Cano has gone 10-for-16 with two walks, two doubles, a homer and four RBI. After a poor 2019 campaign in which he had trouble staying healthy, a short sprint of a season may be just what Cano needs to put up big numbers again.

Impact Cano wasn't in the starting lineup Thursday but blasted his first home run of the season in his return to the starting nine during Friday's 11-10 loss. The 37-year-old carries a .949 OPS with two extra-base hits and three RBI over his first 25 at-bats this season.

Impact In a surprise move, the 21-year-old will bypass the Triple-A level entirely and open the 60-game season with the big club as a reserve infielder. Expect Gimenez to serve as the top backup at shortstop and second base behind Amed Rosario and Robinson Cano, a role that may only translate to a couple starts per week. Gimenez may provide most of his impact as a late-inning defensive replacement or as a pinch runner, given his above-average speed.

Joins Mets on minors deal Dozier signed a minor-league contract with the Mets on Wednesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.

Impact Dozier signed a minor-league deal with the Padres back in February but was released by the team after failing to make their 60-man player pool. The veteran has fallen from his peak, when he hit 42 homers for the Twins back in 2016, but he's still a capable enough player, as his .238/.340/.430 slash line for the Nationals last season was good for a nearly average 99 wRC+, an acceptable figure for a middle infielder. It's unclear when he'll be ready for game action with the Mets or what kind of role he'll have once he arrives, as Robinson Cano appears to have second base locked down.
