Recalled by Pirates Castro was recalled by the Pirates on Wednesday.

Impact Castro was sent down by the Pirates in mid-March and hasn't yet played above High-A. However, he'll join the major-league roster after Anthony Alford was designated for assignment in a corresponding move. Castro hit .136 with two home runs and six RBI this spring and should mainly serve in a depth role for the Pirates.

Optioned Tuesday The Pirates optioned Castro to minor-league camp Tuesday.

Impact The switch-hitting infielder went 3-for-19 in Grapefruit League action, but he hit homers on consecutive days to close out his time in camp. Known for his elite exit velocity, the 21-year-old will likely begin 2021 at Double-A Altoona. Castro hit 19 homers in 2019 split between Low-A and High-A ball.

Contract purchased by Pirates Castro's contract was selected by the Pirates on Friday.

Impact Castro is best known for posting some pretty elite exit velocity readings in the lower levels by middle infielder standards. He hit 14 home runs in 61 games at Low-A in 2019 as a 20-year-old, which is quite the feat, but he fell flat after a promotion to High-A. Castro will likely open the year at High-A or Double-A and could reach the majors in 2022.
