However, he'll join the club ahead of Saturday's matchup against the Rays and should serve in a bench role for the Yankees. Tyler Wade was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to make room for Odor on the active roster.

He reached a new low last season, striking out 31.8 percent of the time while hitting .167. Odor is unlikely to serve as anything more than a bench option in New York unless he can demonstrate that he's gotten back to his former level.

The Rangers don't intend to send him to the minor leagues and will instead release him if they can't find a trade partner. It's quite the fall from grace for the 27-year-old, who has three 30-homer seasons under his belt but who has also hit just .197/.268/.433 over the last two years. It's possible he sticks somewhere as a reclamation project, but it would be a surprise if another team views him as an everyday player.
