Recalled from Triple-A Tellez was called up to the big-league roster Friday. He is starting at designated hitter and batting fifth against the Astros.

Impact The first baseman and designated hitter takes the roster spot of Joe Panik (calf), who was placed on the injured list. Tellez was on the roster from Opening Day until April 27 and contributed little offensively, but he did have one five-game stretch with eight hits. He hit .300 with one home run, three walks and three strikeouts in three games with Triple-A Buffalo.

Recall depends on Springer Tellez is expected to be recalled whenever George Springer (quadriceps) is able to play the outfield regularly, Gregor Chisholm of the Toronto Star reports.

Impact Tellez was sent to the alternate site Wednesday because Springer is only able to serve as the designated hitter at the moment, leaving Tellez with nowhere to play. Chisholm says Springer's move to full-time outfield work isn't imminent, so we probably won't see Tellez back in the majors until early-to-mid May.

Locks up roster spot Toronto informed Tellez on Sunday that he would be included on the Opening Day roster, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports.

Impact The uncertain status of George Springer (oblique) for the start of the season might have helped Tellez's case for a spot on the 26-man roster, but the 26-year-old entered the spring on fairly sturdy ground after submitting a career-best .886 OPS over 127 plate appearances in the abbreviated 2020 campaign. The lefty-hitting Tellez will likely sit against southpaws more often than not, but he should start at least semi-regularly at either designated hitter or first base when the Blue Jays oppose right-handed pitchers.
