Impact Giovanny Gallegos pitched each of the previous two days and threw 1.2 innings in collecting a save Friday, so the Cardinals went to Helsley to protect a one-run, ninth-inning lead Saturday. The right-hander got the job done, needing only 13 pitches to retire the side and notch his second save of the campaign. Helsley has yet to give up an earned run across 14.2 innings on the season, and he has compiled a magnificent 25:2 K:BB.

Impact Helsley was efficient, throwing 14 of 18 pitches for strikes. It was a little intriguing that manager Oli Marmol stuck with Helsley for a second inning even though Giovanny Gallegos hasn't pitched since a four-run meltdown for a blown save April 25. For his part, Helsley has allowed just one hit while piling up 16 strikeouts in 8.1 innings in a high-leverage role. The hard-throwing right-hander has also logged three holds in addition to the save he earned Sunday.

Impact Helsley underwent knee surgery in the offseason, but this news indicates he's recovered from that operation. The 27-year-old played a versatile role in the bullpen last year. He posted a 6-4 record, one save, 10 holds, 4.56 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 47:27 K:BB across 47.1 innings. He's got solid velocity -- he averaged 97.5 mph on his fastball last year -- and the right-hander's 3.99 FIP from last season suggests he was a little unlucky. Still, he's not expected to be part of the closer committee to begin 2022.
