Impact In his last appearance Aug. 22 against the Phillies, Weathers worked behind opener Craig Stammen. The rookie didn't take well to the primary-pitcher role, covering two innings while giving up three runs on five hits to inflate his ERA to 5.27. After starting the season on a promising note, Weathers has faded badly since the beginning of June, and the Padres' mounting list of injured starting pitchers is likely the only thing keeping him in the rotation at this point. He could end up moving to the bullpen once the likes of Chris Paddack (oblique), Dinelson Lamet (hip/forearm) and Jake Arrieta (hamstring) start returning from the injured list.

Impact Weathers got off to a rough start, coughing up a leadoff blast to Connor Joe. The rest of the damage against him came during a four-run fourth inning, including a two-run homer by Charlie Blackmon. It was his fourth consecutive outing allowing at least five runs but he managed to avoid taking a fourth straight loss. Impact Arizona starter Caleb Smith gave up five runs in less than two innings Friday, providing Weathers with a comfortable cushion to work with. However, the Padres starter couldn't hold the big advantage, surrendering a pair of runs in the third inning before falling apart in the fourth. He gave up four straight hits to begin that frame and was pulled without recording an out. After a strong start to the campaign, Weathers has struggled mightily over his past two outings, allowing a combined 14 runs across seven innings. As a result, his season ERA has jumped from a strong 2.73 to a much less desirable 4.26. His next start is tentatively scheduled to come at home against Miami next week.
