Taking at-bats on back field Soto (calf) will get at-bats in a back-field game at Padres camp Tuesday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Impact Soto was scratched from a Cactus League game Monday due to tightness in his left calf, but it doesn't seem to be anything overly concerning. He could return to Cactus League action as early as Wednesday and should be just fine for Opening Day, assuming there are no further setbacks.

Minimum two weeks of no-throw Padres manager Bob Melvin said Tuesday that it will be a minimum of a couple weeks before Musgrove (toe) can resume throwing, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Impact Musgrove suffered a fracture to the big toe on his left foot during a weight room mishap Monday. He's going to work with the Padres' training staff to keep his arm strong throughout the healing process, but this is obviously a significant setback to his readiness for the beginning of the 2023 regular season. He'll almost certainly be placed on the 15-day IL ahead of Opening Day and could wind up missing much -- or all -- of the first month of meaningful games.

Fractures toe in weight room mishap Musgrove suffered a fractured left big toe during a weight room incident Monday, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
Impact A timeline for Musgrove's return isn't known yet, but this will certainly lead to him beginning the season on the injured list. It's obviously a big blow to the Padres and to fantasy managers who have used a pick on Musgrove in early drafts. San Diego had been slated to start the season with a six-man rotation and still conceivably could, although it's possible this news might change its plans.

Could be ready by Opening Day Pomeranz (elbow) has tossed eight bullpen sessions this spring and is aiming to be ready to pitch in games by late March, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports.
Impact Pomeranz didn't pitch at all in the majors last season, hurling just 4.2 minor-league innings before being shut down while attempting to rehab from flexor tendon surgery. The Padres have him on a gradual progression with his recent injury history in mind, but he still has a chance to see some spring action and be available out of the bullpen on Opening Day. Despite Pomeranz's struggles to stay healthy, he could be a major part of San Diego's bullpen if he avoids arm trouble this season. He was very effective in 2021, posting a 1.75 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 30:10 K:BB over 25.2 innings while recording 13 holds in 27 appearances.

Impact Soto was scratched Monday for left calf tightness, but Melvin said that the outfielder's removal from the lineup was precautionary. The outfielder will likely be held out again if there's any sense of tightness again Tuesday, but it does appear that Soto has avoided a significant injury, and he should be fine for the regular season if there aren't any setbacks.

Impact Soto will be replaced by Taylor Kohlwey in the lineup. Kohlwey will hit seventh, while David Dahl will move up to the second spot against Los Angeles. The Padres have no reason to be anything but careful with one of the best offensive players in baseball, but this is obviously a potential concern for a player that is being drafted highly in eligible formats. There should be further update on Soto's status before the end of Monday.

Making spring debut Tuesday Tatis (suspension) will serve as the Padres' designated hitter in Tuesday's Cactus League game versus the Giants, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact Tatis will be making his spring debut in what marks his first game action at any level since he was handed an 80-game ban last August for violating MLB's performance-enhancing drugs policy. Less than a month later, Tatis underwent surgery to repair the labrum in his left shoulder, and he had an additional procedure on his left wrist in October. The 24-year-old has subsequently recovered from both surgeries and will be able to knock off some rust in spring training, but he'll still have to sit out the first 20 contests of the 2023 campaign while he completes his suspension. With the universal designated hitter now in place, Tatis could be eased back in when first eligible April 20 rather than stepping back into a full-time role in the field. During spring training, the Padres plan to have Tatis turn most of his defensive focus to right field, where he's expected to settle into a permanent spot following the Friars' offseason signing of shortstop Xander Bogaerts.
