Added to 40-man roster The Padres selected Bachar's contract Friday and optioned him to Triple-A El Paso, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
Impact Bachar exercised an opt-out clause in his minor-league deal with the San Diego on Thursday, giving the team 24 hours to add him to their 40-man roster. Rather than lose the 29-year-old in free agency, the Padres will award him a roster spot, though he will remain in El Paso for now. Bachar owns a 4.06 ERA and 1.45 WHIP through 57.2 innings in his first season at the Triple-A level.

Impact Acquired Tuesday from the Pirates in exchange for left-hander Ronaldys Jimenez, Perez will bolster the back end of the San Diego rotation. He may not be in line for a long-term stay in the rotation, however, as Joe Musgrove (elbow) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment this weekend and could be ready to return from the 60-day injured list around mid-August to take over Perez's starting role. Beginning rehab stint Padres manager Mike Shildt said Wednesday that Musgrove (elbow) will make a rehab appearance with a minor-league affiliate Sunday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.
Impact The right-hander threw about 40 pitches in a two-inning simulated game Tuesday and has now been fully cleared for game action. Musgrove has been sidelined since late May due to a bone spur and bone bruise in his right elbow, and he'll likely need at least a couple starts in the minors before being ready to rejoin the Padres.
