Yu Darvish - Signs six-year, $108M extension Darvish and the Padres agreed Thursday to a six-year, $108 million contract extension, according to MLB.com's AJ Cassavell and Mark Feinsand.

Impact This deal could keep Darvish in San Diego through 2028, pushing into his early-40s. Prior to the new agreement, the 36-year-old right-hander was due $18 million in 2023 with free agency looming next winter. Darvish delivered a stellar 3.10 ERA, 0.95 WHIP and 197:37 K:BB across 194.2 regular-season innings (30 starts) last season for the Friars. He also registered a 2.88 ERA and 23:6 K:BB over 25 innings (four starts) in the 2022 playoffs. It's the third different six-year contract of his illustrious MLB career.

Rangel Ravelo - Signs minor-league contract Ravelo signed a minor-league contract Wednesday with the Padres which includes an invitation to major-league spring training.

Impact Ravelo spent most of the last two years in Nippon Professional Baseball, and his numbers were less than spectacular in 2022 with the Orix Buffaloes. The 30-year-old first baseman and corner outfielder will probably be nothing more than minor-league depth for San Diego in 2023.

Timmy Lopes - Signs NRI with San Diego Lopes, who signed a minor-league contract with the Padres in December, has received an invitation to big-league spring training.

Impact Lopes was in the Rockies organization last season and couldn't battle his way above Triple-A Albuquerque. The 28-year-old outfielder is a career .246/.310/.352 hitter in 94 games (290 plate appearances) at the MLB level.

Luis Liberato - Bags spring training invite The Padres announced Wednesday that Liberato has been invited to big-league spring training.

Impact Liberato was designated for assignment in November and was outrighted to Triple-A El Paso after clearing waivers. The 27-year-old played well for Triple-A El Paso in 2022, supplying an .895 OPS over 390 plate appearances. He received the chance to make his big-league debut for the Padres in September, but now that he no longer possesses a spot on the 40-man roster, Liberato will most likely be set to return to El Paso to begin the 2023 campaign.

Eric Hanhold - Inks NRI deal with San Diego Hanhold signed a minor-league contract Wednesday with the Padres that includes an invitation to major-league spring training.

Impact Hanhold spent the entire 2022 season with the Triple-A affiliate of the Pirates, pitching to a 3.40 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 49:24 K:BB in 53 innings of relief. The 29-year-old has surrendered 11 runs -- 10 earned -- in just 12.2 career major-league frames.

Jackson Merrill - Invited to MLB camp Merrill received an invitation to MLB spring training Wednesday.

Impact Merrill is widely considered one of the top shortstop prospects in baseball, and he is coming off a 2022 campaign where he slashed .325/.387/.482 with five homers and eight stolen bases over 219 plate appearances at Low-A Lake Elsinore. As a 19-year-old who hasn't played above that Low-A level, it's very unlikely that Merrill helps out the Padres in 2023, but his ability to hit for average along with solid defense at a premium position does give him a chance to be a fast-track player.

Efraín Contreras - Returns on minors contract Contreras re-signed Wednesday with the Padres on a minor-league contract with an invitation to major-league spring training.

Impact Contreras was non-tendered by San Diego earlier this offseason, but he's now back in the fold with a chance to strut his stuff on the MLB side of camp -- at least in the early part of the spring. The 23-year-old right-hander has yet to make an appearance above High-A ball.
