Pitching well this springWorkman has not allowed a run across five Cactus League innings while striking out eight.
ImpactWorkman joined the Cubs on a one-year deal in mid-February and he's looked right at home so far. The righty reliever had a down 2020, posting a 5.95 ERA and 2.24 WHIP across 19.2 innings with the Red Sox and Phillies, but he was much better in 2019 (1.88 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in 71.2 innings for Boston). Workman figures to slot into a setup role with Chicago, but he could end up getting save opportunities if Craig Kimbrel struggles.

Sharp ThursdayArrieta tossed four innings of one-run ball in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against Cleveland. He allowed four hits and struck out five.
ImpactThis looked like the Arrieta from his previous stint with the Cubs, as he was locked in against the 17 batters he faced. The veteran righty now has a 2.89 ERA and seven strikeouts across 9.1 innings this spring. He's coming off a tough 2020 campaign in which he posted a 5.08 ERA and 1.51 WHIP in nine starts for the Phillies, but Arrieta will have the chance to prove he has something left as Chicago's likely No. 2 starter.

May be part of deeper benchThe Cubs could choose to carry 13 position players instead of 12 to start the year, which might help Sogard make the Opening Day roster, Gordon Wittenmyer of NBC Sports Chicago rep...
ImpactEarlier this spring, it seemed the organization was leaning toward having 12 position players and 14 pitchers. However, team president Jed Hoyer said recently that the Cubs could instead go with an even 13-13 split, which could help both Sogard and Nico Hoerner make the roster. If they do end up carrying the extra pitcher, it seems unlikely that both Sogard and Hoerner would stick around with David Bote also in the mix.
