Mike Clevinger - Minor-league game on tapClevinger (elbow) is scheduled to pitch in a minor-league spring game Wednesday against Angels farmhands, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
ImpactThough Clevinger believes he's made a full recovery from Tommy John surgery and expects to be part of San Diego's Opening Day rotation, the Padres will ease him back into action against a collection of lesser-established Angels players in what will mark the right-hander's first game action since Oct. 6, 2020. Clevinger will likely only cover an inning or two in the appearance, but if all goes well, he should make his Cactus League debut at some point early next week. Even if Clevinger avoids any setbacks with his elbow as big-league camp progresses, the Padres will still likely want to make sure his velocity and command are up to snuff in his spring outings before confirming him for the Opening Day rotation. Padres manager Bob Melvin previously said last week that Clevinger is "set in stone" for the rotation if 100 percent healthy, according to AJ Cassavell of MLB.com.

Thomas Eshelman - Catches on with FriarsEshelman agreed Monday with the Padres on a minor-league contract, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.
ImpactThe owner of a 5.77 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 4.4 K-BB% over 98.1 career innings, Eshelman has been far from effective over parts of three seasons in the big leagues. Even so, the 27-year-old right-hander at least brings value to the Padres by adding to the organization's starting pitching depth, which is no small thing after the MLB club struggled to trot out four healthy starters late in the second half of the 2021 campaign. San Diego should at least head into Opening Day with five healthy starters, so Eshelman will likely report to Triple-A El Paso before big-league camp comes to a close.

CJ Abrams - Hits second homer of springAbrams hit a solo home run as a pinch hitter in the ninth inning in San Diego's Cactus League loss to Milwaukee on Sunday.
ImpactAbrams connected on a shot to left field off Brewers reliever Dylan File in his only at-bat of the game. The Padres' top prospect also homered Saturday and has gone 4-for-6 with the pair of long balls and three RBI across three games this spring. Abrams hasn't yet shown much power in the minors -- he hit just two homers in 183 plate appearances last season -- but has the potential to grow that tool given his ability to make hard contact and his developing strength. He hasn't yet played above the Double-A level and is expected to open the 2022 campaign in the minors, but a strong showing could lead to a call-up sometime in 2022.
