ImpactThe move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the newly-acquired Genesis Cabrera. Thornton has pitched well during his brief time in the majors this season but has spent the bulk of the year at Triple-A Buffalo, where he's posted a 4.18 ERA in 22 relief appearances.

Génesis Cabrera - Acquired by Blue JaysThe Blue Jays acquired Cabrera from the Cardinals in exchange for Sammy Hernandez on Friday, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.
ImpactCabrera had been designated for assignment after posting a disappointing 5.06 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 38:18 K:BB over 32 innings out of the St. Louis bullpen this season. The left-hander has a big arm and has flashed more in the past, though, so perhaps Toronto will be able to coax more out of him.

Alejandro Kirk - Homers, tallies three hits in winKirk went 3-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and one run scored in Thursday's win over the Padres.
ImpactKirk singled in each of his first two trips to the plate and walked in third at-bat, but was left stranded each time. He then added a two-run home in the bottom of the eighth to put the Blue Jays up 4-0, his first long ball since June 5 against the Astros. The catcher is still hitting just .172 for the month after the three-hit performance while it was also his first time drawing a walk in his last 23 games.

Blake Snell - Hit with tough lossSnell (6-8) took the loss Thursday, allowing one run on five hits and seven walks over five innings against the Blue Jays. He struck out four.
ImpactSnell managed to limit the Blue Jays to one run over five frames despite issuing a season-high seven walks. Unfortunately, the Padres' offense was unable to back him with any run support as the lefty went on to suffer his eighth loss of the season. Snell has allowed only one run over four July starts, lowering his season ERA to 2.67 in the process.
