Mitch Haniger - Looks unlikely for Opening Day Giants manager Gabe Kapler said Thursday that Haniger (oblique) won't resume baseball activity for at least another week, Evan Webeck of the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Impact It could be as long as 10 days before Haniger is able to return to daily workouts in Giants camp. "We're just going to gradually build him up," said Kapler. "I don't think there's any rush to get him ready." Haniger suffered a Grade 1 oblique strain earlier this month and seems likely to open the 2023 season with an IL stint. The oft-injured outfielder inked a three-year, $43.5 million contract with San Francisco in December.

Austin Slater - Making first OF start Thursday Slater (elbow) is making his first outfield start of the spring Thursday against the Mariners.
Impact Slater will cover center field and bat cleanup after taking his first handful of Cactus League plate appearances out of the DH spot. He was diagnosed with right elbow neuritis a few weeks ago, but it doesn't seem to be an issue any longer.

Thomas Szapucki - To see thoracic outlet specialist Szapucki (arm) said Thursday he is planning to see a thoracic outlet specialist next week, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact That's ominous news given the way thoracic outlet syndrome has altered many promising pitching careers. Szapucki has been experiencing nerve issues in his upper left arm for the last couple of weeks in Giants camp. The initial diagnosis was neuropathy, but it might prove to be a more severe issue.

Sergio Romo - Set to retire as a Giant Romo signed a minor-league contract with the Giants on Thursday, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports.
Impact Romo isn't going to attempt to make the team or pitch in a regular-season game this season. Instead, the plan is for the 40-year-old to make a tune-up appearance or two and then pitch one final time in the March 27 Bay Bridge exhibition finale against the Athletics in San Francisco. That will allow him to get the send-off he deserves from Giants fans before he rides off into retirement. Romo has had a 15-year major-league career and was part of three World Series titles during his nine seasons in San Francisco.

Impact The 21-year-old outfield prospect slashed .211/.275/.344 through 407 plate appearances with High-A Eugene last season and has already shown enough potential to warrant a spot on the Giants' 40-man roster. Matos went 6-for-24 at the plate this spring with a home run, and he will likely return to Eugene for the start of 2023 with a shot at reaching Double-A at some point.

Patrick Bailey - Reassigned to minor-league camp The Giants reassigned Bailey to minor-league camp Wednesday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact The decision to send down the 23-year-old backstop hardly comes as a surprise, as Bailey has yet to advance past High-A ball. Bailey slashed .225/.342/.419 through 325 plate appearances with High-A Eugene last season and could begin 2023 there again, but there's also a solid chance he gets bumped up to Double-A Richmond for Opening Day.

Impact Wade has a home run, a double and three RBI this spring, but he's also struck out six times without recording a walk. After a strong 2021 campaign, Wade slumped to a .207/.305/.359 slash line with eight homers, 26 RBI and 29 runs scored across 77 contests in an injury-plagued 2022. He's expected to get the first crack at a starting role at first base, but he may be limited to the strong side of a platoon with Wilmer Flores. Wade has logged a poor .113/.169/.141 slash line against left-handed pitchers since the start of 2020.

Thairo Estrada - Making decent contact Estrada has gone 4-for-18 across eight Cactus League games.
Impact Interestingly, Estrada hasn't recorded a single -- he has two doubles, a triple and a home run. The 27-year-old is expected to be the Giants' Opening Day second baseman, though it's also possible he's asked to fill in at shortstop with Brandon Crawford bothered by a knee injury that disrupted his 2022 season. Estrada enjoyed a breakout by becoming a full-timer in the majors last year, slashing .260/.322/.400 with 14 home runs, 21 stolen bases, 62 RBI and 71 runs scored over 140 contests. He should be able to see similar playing time this year, and the possibility of positional versatility makes him attractive in fantasy.

Tyler Rogers - Mixed results in spring games Rogers has allowed two earned runs on four hits and four walks with two strikeouts over 3.2 innings across four Cactus League games.
Impact Rogers doesn't strike out many batters with his sidearm delivery, so that's not a concern, but the increase in walks is a bit troublesome. He posted a 5.8 K/9 and 2.7 BB/9 across 75.2 innings in a setup role last season, which also saw him earn 15 holds but no saves. The right-hander will compete with his twin brother, Taylor Rogers, for high-leverage spots, though Camilo Doval is locked in as the Giants' closer to begin the season.

Taylor Rogers - Doing fine in spring Rogers has allowed one earned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out eight over 4.1 innings across five Cactus League appearances.
Impact Rogers had an elevated 2.7 BB/9 over 64.1 innings between the Brewers and the Padres last year, and walks appear to still be an issue for him. Everything else is in order though, and the southpaw should be ready to take on a setup role in his first year with the Giants. Manager Gabe Kapler is likely to roll with Camilo Doval as the closer, but Rogers has reached 30 saves twice in his career, so he will be a solid secondary option for games where Doval isn't available.

Impact He suffered a left hip flexor strain over the weekend, but it's been deemed mild and it sounds like he should be ready to play before the end of the week. Villar is expected to log the bulk of the at-bats at third base for the Giants this season.

Impact Winn was added to the 40-man roster in November so that he could be protected from the Rule 5 Draft, but he never stood much of a chance to make the Opening Day squad out of camp this spring. The 25-year-old posted a 4.08 ERA in 108 innings last season between Low-A, High-A and Double-A ball.

Impact Guzman will not require surgery, but this injury is going to put a hard pause on his pursuit of a relief role in San Francisco. The 28-year-old former first baseman had been impressing with high-90s velocity this spring. There's no exact recovery timetable at the moment.

Impact Johnson isn't expected to begin the year in the majors, but he has one intriguing trait, and that is speed. He's recorded at least 25 steals in each one of his minor-league seasons, and he's up to seven thefts over eight Cactus League games this spring. The Giants' outfield likely won't have room for Johnson, but with a number of injury-prone players on the roster, he could work his way back to the majors with a strong start to the year at Triple-A Sacramento.
