ImpactFulmer has been playing catch without issue over the last few days and is ready to take the next step in his recovery from the mild right forearm strain that sent him to the injured list Aug. 26. He could potentially skip a minor-league rehab assignment and return to the Cubs' bullpen this weekend if everything continues to go smoothly.

Marcus Stroman - Throws bullpen sessionStroman (ribs) threw a successful bullpen session Monday, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

ImpactIt was his first time throwing off a mound since he was diagnosed with a right rib cage cartilage fracture in mid-August. Stroman still has a lot of hurdles to clear, but he could potentially be an option again for the Cubs' rotation around late September if all continues to go well. His last major-league start was July 31 against the Reds.

Christopher Morel - Sitting again TuesdayMorel remains out of the lineup Tuesday versus the Giants.

ImpactThere's no word of any injury, but this is Morel's third straight absence from the Cubs' starting lineup. It could be all performance-related, as the versatile 24-year-old has slumped to a .127/.215/.239 batting line over his last 79 plate appearances dating back to Aug. 3.

ImpactWalker will be opening for the 12th time this season and will likely cover anywhere from 1-to-3 innings before turning the game over to the bullpen, with lefty Sean Manaea or right-hander Jakob Junis representing the top candidate to work in bulk relief. After going 7-0 in Walker's first seven turns as an opener, the Giants have lost each of the last four games that the right-hander has started.

Johnson should continue to play fairly regularly at Sacramento for the rest of the season.

ImpactBefore landing on the injured list in mid-August with a mid-back strain, Stripling had covered at least four innings in each of his seven outings with the Giants following the All-Star break. With that in mind, his light workload Friday was somewhat surprising, and it could be an indication that the Giants may not intend to bring him back as a traditional starter. San Francisco has been getting by with four regular starters of late in Logan Webb, Alex Cobb, Kyle Harrison and Tristan Beck and has been deploying Sean Manaea as a primary pitcher out of the bullpen in lieu of a fifth starter.
