Hit hard by White Sox Gray (7-9) allowed five earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out six across 4.2 innings to take the loss Wednesday against the White Sox.
Impact Gray surrendered runs in each of his last three innings to sink his effort. The big blow came on a two-run home run by Gavin Sheets in the third inning, as Gray allowed no other extra-base hits. He'll end the season in disappointing fashion, surrendering nine earned runs across his last 8.2 frames and two starts. Gray's final 4.19 ERA doesn't stand out positively, though he also had a 1.22 WHIP and 155 strikeouts across 135.1 innings.

Impact Gray allowed a Trea Turner infield single and nothing more through four innings but was touched up for three runs in the fifth and another in the sixth before getting the hook. After pitching to a 1.80 ERA over his previous five starts, it's safe to say Gray won't be too pleased with how this outing ended. First loss since July Gray (7-7) was tagged with the loss Sunday against the Cardinals after allowing two runs on three hits and a walk while fanning six across seven innings.
Impact Gray was on a run of eight straight starts without a loss but that impressive streak came to an end Sunday, though he also kept alive his streak of appearances allowing two or fewer runs -- it's up to five appearances now, a span in which he's also recorded three quality starts. Gray has been nothing short of outstanding since the beginning of August, going 4-1 with a 3.02 ERA and a 0.85 WHIP across 44.2 innings (eight starts) in that span.

Strong over five innings Gray tossed five innings Monday, giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits while striking out eight in the loss to the Cubs. He did not factor into the game's decision.
Impact The 31-year-old was tagged for a three-run home run by Ian Happ in the first inning before settling in and pitching four scoreless innings to finish his outing. Interestingly, Gray was pulled after only 66 pitches in favor of a pinch hitter in the top of the sixth inning. Since an eight run blow-up against the Cardinals on July 25, the right-hander has rebounded nicely with a 2.89 ERA and 0.92 WHIP over his last eight starts. He is projected to start next against the Cardinals on the road Sunday.
