Optioned to Triple-A Horwitz was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo on Sunday.

Impact The 26-year-old came into camp hoping to land a backup job at first base behind Vladimir Guerrero, but Horwitz batted only .125 (5-for-40) in Grapefruit League action, and the signings of Daniel Vogelbach and Joey Votto (ankle) cut off his path to the 26-man roster. Horwitz slashed .337/.450/.495 with 10 homers in 107 games for Buffalo last season, but he may need to add more power to his profile to get serious consideration for a regular job in the majors.

Hitting cleanup, Belt to IL Horwitz is hitting cleanup Tuesday against the Rangers after Brandon Belt (back spasms) was placed on the 10-day injured list.

Impact Horwitz has excellent plate skills and questionable power for a first baseman, but he will get an opportunity to play regularly against righties in the short term. On the season, he has a .308/.400/.462 slash line with one home run, seven strikeouts and four walks in 30 plate appearances.

The 25-year-old went 2-for-8 in a brief stint with the Blue Jays back in June and has posted an impressive .337/.450/.495 slash line with 10 homers and 72 RBI across 107 games this summer at Triple-A.
