Impact All of the damage against Howard came in the second inning, as he let a run score on a fielder's choice before Cedric Mullins swatted a three-run blast. The 25-year-old right-hander issued zero walks for the fifth time in 18 appearances (14 starts) this year. He's struggled to a 7.04 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 50:24 K:BB in 46 innings overall. Howard projects for one more start this season, likely versus Cleveland during next weekend's three-game series.

Impact Despite a touch of wildness -- Howard walked a batter in each of his three frames -- this was one of the right-hander's better outings of the campaign, as it was one of three occasions during which he has tossed three innings without allowing a run. It was certainly a positive rebound after Howard allowed six runs over 1.1 frames in his previous start. The 25-year-old continues to be kept on a short leash, having completed four full frames only once this season, which severely limits his fantasy value. Howard is tentatively projected to next take the mound in Baltimore on Friday.

Impact Howard, who was reinstated from the COVID-19 protocols list ahead of Tuesday's start, was on an innings limit, per Kennedi Landry of MLB.com, and was removed after retiring all six batters faced on 23 pitches. The pitcher said his mechanics were not affected by the stint on the IL and that he felt in sync despite not having pitched in 19 days. Impact After being placed on the COVID-19 IL on Aug. 27, Howard quickly navigated through MLB's health and safety protocols, as he was able to repot to Triple-A Round Rock last Thursday to make a rehab start. He struck out three while allowing one run in two innings in that 36-pitch outing, and he apparently came out of that start and his bullpen session over the weekend feeling no worse for the wear. Even before Howard landed on the COVID-19 IL, the Rangers had routinely deployed him in tandem with another starter, and that plan appears unlikely to change over the final three weeks of the season. Look for Jordan Lyles -- who hasn't pitched since Aug. 31 -- to follow Howard on Tuesday, making Lyles the more likely of the two to factor into any decision.
