Impact Howard was tagged with the Nationals' first run of the game but didn't have too many problems on the mound in his short, 48-pitch outing. Howard has been a starter in each of his last three appearances with the Phillies, but it remains to be seen whether he'll remain in the rotation or if he'll return to the bullpen moving forward. His upside as a starter is quite limited, though, as he's yet to pitch more than four complete innings in any of his appearances.

Impact Making his second start of the season, Howard was held to a low pitch count (66 pitches) as the right-hander continued to build upon his endurance. Howard looked relatively strong through his first four innings of work, holding the Marlins scoreless along the way. Unfortunately, he couldn't keep things moving in the fifth after loading the bases with no outs and was consequently pulled. Luckily the bullpen only allowed one of his baserunners to score. The 24-year-old is likely to get another chance in the rotation, presumably next week at Cincinnati.

The young right-hander should benefit this week from a matchup against a weaker offense in a more pitcher-friendly ballpark in Miami, but he may need to deliver better results to ensure he maintains a spot in the rotation moving forward. Matt Moore (back) could be ready to return from the IL next week and would be a candidate to slot back into the rotation if Howard can't get the job done.

Struggles in short start Howard (0-1) suffered the loss against Boston on Saturday, allowing two runs on one hit and four walks while striking out five over three innings.
Impact Howard showed flashes of his considerable potential in the contest, allowing only one hit -- a double -- and punching out five batters. However, the 24-year-old had problems finding the plate, throwing only 39 of 68 pitches for strikes and issuing four free passes. His struggles were especially harmful in the third inning, when Boston cashed in two of his three walks, including one issued to the opposing pitcher. With Matt Moore going on the 10-day IL on Saturday due to back spasms, Howard could get another chance to make his case for a long-term spot in the rotation. He's tentatively lined up to start at Miami on Thursday.
