JoJo Romero - Takes loss TuesdayRomero (2-1) allowed two runs on two hits over one inning to take the loss Tuesday versus the Diamondbacks.
ImpactRomero was perfect in the seventh inning, but manager Oliver Marmol left him in to begin the eighth. That ended up being a costly mistake, as Romero surrendered two hits and Chris Stratton would go on to give up a tiebreaking two-run triple. Romero has given up a pair of runs in each of his last two appearances, bringing his recent 7.1-inning scoreless streak to a screeching halt. The southpaw is at 4.12 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 18:8 K:BB through 19.2 innings, but he likely remains the Cardinals' top lefty reliever over Andrew Suarez.

Steven Matz - Throws quality startMatz allowed five hits and a walk while striking out six over six scoreless innings in a no-decision versus the Diamondbacks on Tuesday.
ImpactMatz completed six frames for the first time this season, and this was one of his sharpest outings. He's allowed six runs (five earned) over 20.2 innings across four starts since rejoining the Cardinals' rotation. The strong stretch has him at a reasonable 4.34 ERA despite a 1.44 WHIP and 85:30 K:BB through 87 innings through 22 appearances (14 starts). Matz has likely solidified his place in the rotation, so he can be projected for a home start against the Cubs this weekend.

Kevin Ginkel - Collects third saveGinkel allowed a hit in a scoreless inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 3-1 win over the Cardinals.
ImpactGinkel erased his lone mistake with a double play to earn his third save of the season. All of those saves have come within his last four outings as he establishes himself in the closer conversation. The 29-year-old has limited high-leverage experience with 19 holds and four saves over the previous four seasons, and he picked up just one hold in 2023 prior to his recent run of late-inning work. Ginkel has pitched well enough to earn the more prevalent role, posting a 2.31 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 34:11 K:BB through a career-high 39 innings this season.
JULY 26, 2023ROTOWIRE
Merrill Kelly - Pitches well in returnKelly (calf) allowed a run on four hits and two walks while striking out five over six innings in a no-decision versus the Cardinals on Tuesday.
ImpactKelly made his first start since June 24, and he looked solid with 57 of his 86 pitches going for strikes. The Diamondbacks' offense didn't get on the board until the eighth inning, denying him a chance at the win. The right-hander now has a 3.12 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 103:39 K:BB through 101 innings over 17 starts this season. He's projected to make his next start on the road at San Francisco.
