ImpactLeahy made his big-league debut in early July but allowed at least one run in all three of his relief appearances, failing to record three outs in any of them. He'll take his 21.60 ERA and 5.40 WHIP back to the minors, with Drew VerHagen (hip) returning from the injured list to take his spot in the bullpen.

ImpactVerHagen missed three weeks with a hip impingement. Prior to the injury, he recorded an unimpressive 4.78 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 35 relief appearances. Kyle Leahy was optioned to clear space on the roster for his return.

Drew Smyly - Available out of bullpenSmyly will be available out of the bullpen for Saturday's game against the Cardinals, with Michael Fulmer set to open, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.

ImpactThe Cubs haven't officially indicated that Smyly will handle the bulk innings, but considering that he's on turn to start and that Fulmer isn't likely to thrown more than an inning or two after appearing in relief Friday, it seems likely. Smyly has had his moments this season, taking a perfect game into the eighth inning against the Dodgers back in April, but he's stumbled to a 9.87 ERA over his last four starts, so it's no surprise he's lost his manager's confidence.

ImpactDonovan hasn't taken the field since late June while dealing with a flexor strain, but he's made 10 starts as a designated hitter since then, with his 1.042 OPS indicating that the issue seemingly only affects his ability to throw, not hit. He's nonetheless been stuck on the bench for three straight days, first due to a doctor's visit and then due to a pair of matchups against southpaws. (Righty Michael Fulmer will be the first pitcher on the mound for Chicago on Saturday, but lefty Drew Smyly is expected to handle the bulk innings.) Nolan Arenado will fill the DH spot, with Jose Fermin starting at the hot corner.
