Andrew Knizner - Will open as backup catcherKnizner will open the season as the Cardinals' backup catcher, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
ImpactKnizner has gone just 4-for-42 (.095) through 14 games this spring in the Grapefruit League, but he still managed to fend off a challenge from Tres Barrera. It probably came down to experience in the end, as Knizner was the locked-in backup to Yadier Molina the last two years. He'll now fill the same role behind offseason addition Willson Contreras.

Miles Mikolas - Lead candidate for Opening DayMikolas is the leading candidate to start on Opening Day for the Cardinals, John Denton of MLB.com reports.
ImpactThe honor would have almost certainly gone to Adam Wainwright in what is expected to be his farewell MLB season, but it was announced Thursday that he will begin the year on the IL because of a groin strain. Mikolas was the most reliable starter for St. Louis throughout the 2022 campaign, working to a 3.29 ERA and 1.03 WHIP in 202.1 regular-season innings. He'll make his final Grapefruit League start Friday night against the Nationals.

José Iglesias - On roster bubbleIglesias is not considered a lock to make the Marlins' Opening Day roster, Barry Jackson and Craig Mish of the Miami Herald report.
ImpactIt sounds like there will be just one roster spot for either Iglesias or Yuli Gurriel, both of whom are in camp as non-roster invitees. Which was the team might be leaning out of the two isn't clear. Iglesias, 33, is 2-for-11 in four games so far during Grapefruit League play and "hasn't looked great this spring," per Jackson and Mish.

Yuli Gurriel - Not a lock to make rosterGurriel is not a lock to make the Marlins' Opening Day roster, Barry Jackson and Craig Mish of the Miami Herald report.
ImpactJackson and Mish are hearing that the Marlins are currently leaning toward keeping both Jesus Sanchez and Bryan De La Cruz on the roster, leaving only one spot for Gurriel and Jose Iglesias. It's not clear whether Gurriel or Iglesias might have a leg up for a spot. Gurriel, 38, is just 2-for-16 at the plate so far this spring.

Johnny Cueto - Throws bullpen without issueCueto (arm) threw a bullpen session Wednesday without issue, Barry Jackson and Craig Mish of the Miami Herald report.
ImpactCueto was held out of some scheduled back-field work this past Monday due to general arm soreness, but he passed the test Wednesday and will throw again Friday. If all goes well from this point forward, the veteran right-hander should be able to take the ball for the Marlins somewhere within the first week of the 2023 regular season.
