Matt Carpenter - Draws rare startCarpenter will start at third base and bat fifth Monday against the Dodgers.
ImpactCarpenter will pick up his first start since Aug. 14 while everyday third baseman Nolan Arenado gets a rare day off. While filling a bench role exclusively over the past three weeks, Carpenter has picked up only 13 plate appearances, going hitless with five strikeouts and three walks.

T.J. McFarland - Grabs sixth holdMcFarland recorded his sixth hold in a loss to the Brewers on Sunday, firing two-thirds scoreless innings.
ImpactMcFarland needed exactly two pitches to record both his outs and close out the sixth inning. The veteran southpaw continues on an extended roll that's seen him coax his ERA and WHIP down to 1.52 and 0.93, respectively, while posting 17 consecutive scoreless appearances.

Edmundo Sosa - Productive in lossSosa went 1-for-3 with an RBI sacrifice fly, a walk and a stolen base in a loss to the Brewers on Sunday.
ImpactSosa continues to validate manager Mike Shildt's decision to afford him the bulk of playing time at shortstop, with Sunday's production pushing his slash line over the last nine games to an outstanding .387/.432/.742 (37 plate appearances). Sosa has impressively provided a bit of everything in that sample, lacing a double, two triples, two home runs, 10 RBI, three walks and nine runs in addition to Sunday's steal, his fourth of the campaign.

Harrison Bader - Plates pair SundayBader went 2-for-5 with a two-run double in a loss to the Brewers on Sunday.
ImpactBader's 12th two-bagger of the season snapped a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning and pushed his RBI total over the three-game set against the Brewers to five. The 27-year-old also has a trio of multi-hit efforts over the first five games of September, pushing his season slash line to a serviceable .251/.314/.422 across 76 contests.

Jake Woodford - Could get rotation lookCardinals manager Mike Shildt suggested that Woodford could replace Kwang Hyun Kim in the rotation when the latter's turn next comes up Thursday against the Dodgers in St. Louis, J...
ImpactAfter being called up from Triple-A Memphis on Friday, Woodford was initially expected to fill a multi-inning relief role for St. Louis over the final month of the season. He may have earned himself a look in the rotation, however, after he successfully filled in for a struggling Kim in Saturday's loss to Milwaukee. After Kim served up four runs on seven hits and a walk while lasting just 1.2 innings in the outing, Woodford came on to strike out five over 5.1 innings of long relief. Considering the Cardinals initially wanted to move Kim to the bullpen before Jack Flaherty's (shoulder) move to the injured list in late August altered those plans, it wouldn't be surprising if the southpaw now shifted to a relief role after Woodford had the chance to get stretched out for starting duty in the loss to Milwaukee.

Jack Flaherty - Resumes playing catchFlaherty (shoulder) resumed playing catch Sunday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
ImpactFlaherty's first throwing session apparently went well, as he'll throw again from 90 feet Monday. The right-hander still has to ramp up his intensity before he's considered to return to game action, but he's made good progress in his recovery recently.
