Impact Brault remains at least a couple weeks away from starting up a throwing program, but he's seemingly progressing as expected to this point since being shut down March 19 with a left lat strain. The Pirates aren't counting on Brault making his season debut until June after placing him on the 60-day injured list prior to Opening Day.

Impact Brault is currently shut down from throwing due to a lat strain that he sustained in late March, and he won't be ready to return to game action for approximately 10-to-12 weeks. The left-hander should have a prominent spot in the starting rotation once he's healthy, but Trevor Cahill should serve as Pittsburgh's fifth starter while Brault is sidelined.

Impact Brault left Friday's spring game against the Orioles with what was described as arm tightness, but Tomczyk provided more clarity on the lefty's injury after getting a chance to evaluate him. The southpaw won't throw for at least a month, and he likely won't be ready to pitch in games for approximately 10-to-12 weeks. Brault is expected to serve as a prominent member of Pittsburgh's rotation once he's healthy, but his absence could pave the way for one of Wil Crowe, Trevor Cahill, Chase De Jong or Cody Ponce to fill a starting role to begin the regular season.

Uneven outing Tuesday Brault started and pitched two scoreless innings against Atlanta on Tuesday, allowing no hits and three walks while striking out three batters.
Impact The walks are worrisome, as the lefty has compiled a career 4.65 BB/9 mark. Brault, who will serve as a starter in 2021, registered a career-best 3.38 ERA in 42.2 innings last season. He threw his fastball less than ever (50.7 percent), limiting hard contact to 31.9 percent -- a major improvement over his 38.6 percent figure in 2019. However, his xFIP of 4.85 was only slightly better than his career 5.04 mark, and a .243 BABIP was well below his .302 average over five years. The 28-year-old showed signs of improvement in 2020, but unless he can improve upon his control, his results will likely prove inconsistent from start to start.
