Bryce Elder - To make second start FridayElder is scheduled to make his second Grapefruit League start Friday against the Astros, Justin Toscano of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

ImpactElder said he felt rushed while adjusting to the new pitch clock in his spring debut Sunday, when he was lit up for four earned runs over just 1.2 innings versus the Yankees. Fighting for the final spot in Atlanta's season-opening starting rotation, he'll look to show more comfort and command Friday afternoon against the reigning World Series champs. Ian Anderson is Elder's primary competition for that No. 5 starter role.

Blake Burkhalter - Headed for Tommy John surgeryManager Brian Snitker said Thursday that Burkhalter (elbow) will require Tommy John surgery, Justin Toscano of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

ImpactBurkhalter was a second-round pick in the 2022 MLB Draft out of Auburn, where he posted a 3.01 ERA with 104 strikeouts over 71.2 career NCAA innings. The 22-year-old right-hander has logged only 4.2 innings to date in pro ball, and it's obviously going to be a while before he's back on the mound.

Tyler Matzek - Recovering from bulging discMatzek (elbow) is recovering from a bulging disc in his back, Justin Toscano of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

ImpactThe bulging disc is in addition to his ongoing recovery from Tommy John surgery. Matzek underwent the reconstructive elbow procedure in October and will miss the entire 2023 campaign. He should be fully recovered from both issues come the start of spring training in 2024.
