Who will be Rays' fifth starter? Here's where they standPORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The battle for the Rays’ No. 5 starter job continued this weekend on Florida’s East Coast, as Josh Fleming, Yonny Ch...

Taylor Walls - Could return ThursdayThe Rays are targeting a return for Walls (oblique) on Thursday, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports.
ImpactWalls has been out of action since the beginning of spring training with an oblique strain. The Rays and manager Kevin Cash have insisted that the infielder would be ready for the start of the regular season, and a return to the Grapefruit League lineup two weeks before the start of the campaign seems to make that likely. Walls will likely serve as a utility infielder in 2023, and his role won't have much fantasy relevance unless he earns a bigger opportunity.

Sean Reynolds - Sent to Double-AThe Marlins optioned Reynolds to Double-A Pensacola on Sunday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ImpactMiami added Reynolds, a converted first baseman, to the 40-man roster over the winter after he thrived in his first season of full-time pitching in the lower minors in 2022. Between stops at High-A Beloit and Pensacola, the 24-year-old right-handed reliever turned in a 4.13 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 66:24 K:BB in 52.1 innings while holding opposing hitters to a .201 average.

Jacob Amaya - Sent to minorsThe Marlins optioned Amaya to Triple-A Jacksonville on Sunday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.
ImpactWith Jazz Chisholm and Luis Arraez seemingly locked in as the Marlins' Opening Day starters in the middle infield, Amaya was never a realistic candidate to break camp with the big club. After being acquired from the Dodgers in January in the deal that sent Miguel Rojas to Los Angeles, Amaya will likely have a clearer path to reaching the big leagues in 2023 with his new organization. He was productive in his first taste of the Triple-A level with Oklahoma City in 2022, slashing .259/.368/.381 with eight home runs and three stolen bases across 351 plate appearances.

John Romano: Don't look now, but the Rays' rotation may look shockingly traditional in 2023ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — In those early days before they became geniuses, the people in charge were mostly desperate.

Tyler Glasnow - Still in treatment phaseRays manager Kevin Cash told reporters Saturday that Glasnow (oblique) has not started throwing as of yet, Kristie Ackert of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
Impact"Just treatment," Cash said on Saturday before their Grapefruit League game. The right-hander was diagnosed with a Grade 2 left oblique strain on February 27 while throwing to hitters during a live batting practice session. He's expected to miss at least six weeks with the injury, but it could progress longer since Tampa Bay is sure to be cautious with Glasnow.
