Josh Winder - Could win spot in rotationWinder could win a spot in the Minnesota rotation to begin the season, manager Rocco Baldelli told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Winder gave up two hits and a walk but had three st...
ImpactWinder didn't pitch in the minors last year after July 21 because of a right shoulder impingement, but he looks fully healthy as spring training begins. It's possible, even likely, that the Twins sign a veteran to fill out their starting rotation, but until then the fifth starter role is open. Winder looks like the leading candidate with Lewis Thorpe and Griffin Jax moving to the bullpen. However, the competition for the fifth starter role may not be settled until late in spring training and could be in flux early in the season if the Twins don't sign a veteran. He dominated at Double-A (1.98 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, 31.3 K%, 4.8 BB%), but was less dominant in four starts at Triple-A (4.67 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, 22.4 K%, 4.8 BB%).

Kevin Kiermaier - Scratched with sore groinKiermaier was scratched from the lineup for Friday's Grapefruit League game against Baltimore due to left groin soreness, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ImpactAs long as the issue remains nothing worse than soreness, Kiermaier should still have time to get ready for Opening Day, though he's also battled a sore neck earlier in camp and underwent arthroscopic knee surgery over the offseason. It's possible the accumulation of minor problems sends him to the injured list. Josh Lowe will start in center field and would be a candidate to man the position on a regular basis if Kiermaier missing time, though Manuel Margot and Brett Phillips could also see their roles increase.

Jorge Alcala - Slowed by finger issueAlcala has a nail tear on his right middle finger, but his status for Opening Day is not in jeopardy, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.
ImpactAlcala is still throwing side sessions, though he has yet to appear in a spring training contest. He was a key part of Minnesota's bullpen in 2021, posting a 3.92 ERA and 0.97 WHIP across 59.2 innings. If Taylor Rogers falters in the closer role, Alcala could be a candidate to pick up some saves given that he posted 11 holds last season and had a strong 61:13 K:BB.

Robert Dugger - Finds new homeDugger signed a minor-league deal with the Rays in early March, Chris Hilburn-Trenkle of Baseball America reports.
ImpactDugger spent the 2021 season in the Mariners organization, but he struggled mightily across 25.2 innings in the majors by posting a 7.36 ERA and 1.79 WHIP. He'll now get a chance to compete for a low-leverage bullpen role in Tampa Bay.
