Nestor Cortes - Likely to begin as fifth starterYankees manager Aaron Boone hinted Sunday that Cortes (hamstring) will likely be the fifth starter to begin the season, Erik Boland of Newsday reports.
ImpactGerrit Cole is likely to start Opening Day followed by Carlos Rodon and Luis Severino, and then the winner of the competition between Domingo German and Clarke Schmidt would likely start the fourth game. That would give Cortes an extra few days to be ready for the year as he recovers from the strained hamstring that has sidelined him this spring, with Boone telling reporters that he's about a week behind the other arms in the rotation. The left-hander is expected to make his Grapefruit League debut soon, and while his debut may come later than anticipated, Cortes still should be ready to help fantasy managers to begin 2023.

Anthony Volpe - Making waves in campYankees manager Aaron Boone indicated Saturday that Volpe has a chance to break camp with the Yankees, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports.
ImpactComing into the spring, it was generally presumed that Volpe would open the 2023 campaign at the Triple-A level, but the 21-year-old may be changing that narrative with his strong play thus far. Through five Grapefruit League contests, he has gone 5-for-15 with two doubles, a home run and two stolen bases, prompting Boone to say that the club is "paying attention" in regard to Volpe's chances of making the Opening Day roster. Volpe has logged some time at second base this spring, but he's played mostly shortstop throughout his time in the minors, and both Oswald Peraza and Isiah Kiner-Falefa are also vying to start at that position for the Yankees this season. Boone acknowledged that Volpe's lack of professional experience could come into play when final roster decisions are made, saying, "That's part of his case and case against and story. Yeah, it's all part of the equation that you gotta make a decision on at some point."

Aaron Judge - Debut in left coming this weekJudge will make his spring debut in left field either Wednesday or Thursday, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
ImpactJudge is going to play some left field in home games this year, which would allow Giancarlo Stanton to play right field in Yankees Stadium -- an area that will require Stanton to cover less ground. Judge has never played left field in the majors, but his athleticism should allow the transition to be a painless one.
