Begins rehab assignment Antone (elbow) struck one over a scoreless inning for the Reds' affiliate in the Arizona Complex League on Tuesday, MLB.com reports.

Impact Antone is working his way back from a second Tommy John surgery and recently had a setback with a sore right shoulder. Cincinnati manager David Bell received good reports on the outing and said, if all goes well, Antone is projected to rejoin the Reds bullpen by Aug. 19.

Impact It's not clear what affiliate he'll be assigned to or how many rehab appearances he might need, but it figures to be a good number considering how much time he's missed. Antone hasn't pitched anywhere since 2021 following Tommy John surgery and then a flexor strain.

After that, Antone will be targeting July 19 as the starting date for his rehab assignment, and he'll most likely stay in the minors for close to the full length of the 30-day window as he aims to regain both velocity and command coming off his August 2021 Tommy John surgery. Antone had been expected to be fully healthy for spring training, but he suffered a flexor strain in the same elbow over the offseason to further delay his return to the Cincinnati bullpen. He now appears poised to make his 2023 debut at some point in August.

The 29-year-old had been slowed during the offseason as he recovers from Tommy John surgery that forced him to miss the entire 2022 season, and this latest setback will see his 2023 debut occur after Opening Day. When healthy, Antone has been an excellent relief option, and once recovered, he should be a high-leverage option for the Reds.

Impact The good news is the issue is not thought to be related to Antone's elbow, which required Tommy John surgery more than two years ago and gave him a lot of trouble in the aftermath. The 29-year-old reliever will be eased into action at Reds camp this spring with the hope that he might be ready to be used in high-leverage situations at some point in the early part of the 2023 season. Settles with Cincy Antone (elbow) signed a one-year, $770,000 contract with the Reds on Friday to avoid arbitration, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

Impact Antone missed the entirety of 2022 due to Tommy John surgery, but back-to-back seasons with a sub-3.00 ERA and a strikeout rate north of 30 percent in 2020-21 is more than enough reason for the Reds to keep him around. He will likely have to slowly work back into high-leverage situations, but if he's able to return to his pre-injury form, he could take over as the Reds' closer during the season.
