Impact After deGrom threw a second bullpen session Sunday, Bochy declared the right-hander on schedule for the regular season. Apparently, part of that schedule includes at least two more sessions, one of which may include batters. Mitch Garver, who caught Sunday's session, referred to deGrom's fastball as "special" and estimated the pitcher was at about 85 percent.

Impact Leclerc's appearance in the fourth inning, following starter Martin Perez's three-inning stint, indicates he's the team's closer, or at least part of the mix to save games. At this stage of the Cactus League, closers appear earlier in games when an opponent's best hitters are still in the lineup. Martín Pérez - Goes three innings Perez allowed one run on three hits while striking out one over three innings in Monday's spring game against Cincinnati.
Impact Perez was the first Texas starter to work more than two innings and logged 40 pitches. The elevated inning count is due to the left-hander's participation in the World Baseball Classic. He's aiming for 55 to 65 pitches in his next start, according to Jack Magruder of MLB.com, before flying to Miami to join Venezuela for the WBC. Perez, who was the Rangers' most consistent rotation member and earned his first All-Star nod last season, could be a front-end starter on most teams but will serve on the back end of the Rangers' loaded rotation.

Impact Garver caught his first game since May 8 after a forearm injury limited him to designated hitter duty in 2022 before he underwent season-ending surgery in July. Impact Ragans made nine starts in the majors last season but should serve as an organizational depth option in 2023 after Texas added several seasoned starters during the offseason. The lefty had a pair of Tommy John elbow surgeries that wiped out 2018 through 2020 and could use more starts in the minors. In 40 innings against major-league hitters, Ragans' 9.2 BB% and 1.35 HR/9 were higher than league average and his 15.5 K% was lower than average.

Impact Gray was pleased with the results but told Shawn McFarland of the Dallas Morning News that he felt "out of whack" on the mound, which can be normal for starters in their first spring appearances. The right-hander served as Texas' ace in 2022, but the addition of Jacob deGrom, Nathan Eovaldi and Andrew Heaney pushes him further down the rotation. Like all pitchers, health is imperative for the 31-year-old Gray, who's thrown more than 150 innings twice and never more than 200, during his career. He had a 3.96 ERA and 134 strikeouts over 127.1 innings last season.
