Humberto Castellanos - Gets another turn in rotationCastellanos is listed as the Diamondbacks' scheduled starter for Saturday's game in Seattle.
ImpactWith Taylor Widener recently moving to the bullpen and Merrill Kelly (illness) still in the process of building up after being placed on the COVID-19 injured list, Castellanos will pick up a second straight start following his Sept. 4 call-up from Triple-A Reno. He faltered in his start against this same Mariners squad, lasting only 3.2 innings while giving up five runs on seven hits and a walk in a no-decision. Kelly threw 51 pitches in an intrasquad game last weekend and looks on track to return from the IL next week, so Castellanos will likely head to the bullpen or back to Triple-A following Saturday's outing.

Jose Trevino - On a rollTrevino went 1-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored in Wednesday's 8-5 win over the Diamondbacks.
ImpactTrevino was in the middle of a three-run eighth inning that rendered Arizona's two-run ninth meaningless. He drove in two with a single then scored on Jason Martin's ground-rule double. Earlier, he drove in a run on a fielder's choice. While Jonah Heim has surged ahead of Trevino on the depth chart, the 28-year-old veteran is not going away quietly. Over the last 13 games, Trevino is batting .313 (15-for-48) with an .857 OPS and 10 RBI.

Leody Taveras - Ignites offenseTaveras went 1-for-5 with a triple and a run scored in Wednesday's 8-5 win over Arizona.
ImpactThe Rangers were set down in order over the first three innings before Taveras ignited a three-run fourth with his first triple of the season. Taveras has not handled MLB pitching well early in his big-league career -- he was optioned back to Triple-A Round Rock earlier this season after making Texas' roster out of spring training -- but he's looking like a more confident hitter these days. Over the last eight games, he's 10-for-33 (.303) with six extra-base hits, four RBI, three steals and five runs scored. "This guy can impact a game, like I've said many times," manager Chris Woodward told Kennedi Landry of MLB.com. "It's just a consistency in him learning how to approach different at-bats... There's a ton of conviction in the swing." The trick for Taveras will be to build on his success for the remainder of the season, thus putting him in position for an outfield gig in 2022.

Daulton Varsho - Ends RBI droughtVarsho started at catcher and went 2-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI in Wednesday's 8-5 loss to the Rangers.
ImpactVarsho doubled home Henry Ramos during Arizona's two-run second inning, ending an 11-game drought without a run batted in. The Diamondbacks fell for the 10th time in 11 games and are 50 games below .500. That's a situation calling out for guys like Varsho to play daily, but he's used mostly against right-handers, despite an .850 OPS across 60 plate appearances against southpaws. While having him play catcher every day is unsustainable, particularly with Carson Kelly also in need of at-bats, he can play the outfield.

Brandyn Sittinger - Makes MLB debutSittinger allowed one walk over a scoreless relief inning in Wednesday's 8-5 loss to Texas.
ImpactSittinger made his MLB debut after his contract was selected from Triple-A Reno on Tuesday. He entered a clean seventh inning with Arizona trailing 5-3. The 27-year-old right-hander had a combined 4.03 ERA with five saves over 33 games at Double-A Amarillo and Reno. In theory, he's being evaluated for a spot in next year's bullpen.

Nick Ahmed - Slugs late homerAhmed went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 8-5 loss to Texas.
ImpactThe shortstop went yard in the ninth inning, but Arizona's two-run rally wasn't enough to get close to a tie. Five of Ahmed's last 10 hits have gone for extra bases (three doubles, one triple, one homer), a span of 10 games overall. He's hitting .223/.283/.345 with five long balls, 38 RBI, 45 runs scored and seven stolen bases across 450 plate appearances this year, but he continues to see a significant share of playing time.
