ImpactHoward has been out all season with a right lat strain but has been throwing the ball well of late at the Rangers' spring training complex, per Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News. It's not clear whether the Rangers plan to use him as a starter or reliever.

Dane Dunning - Activated from paternity leaveDunning was activated from the paternity list ahead of his start Wednesday against the Tigers.

ImpactDunning didn't wind up missing a turn in the Rangers' rotation while welcoming a new addition to his growing family. The 28-year-old right-hander seems to have earned a permanent starting job with an overall 1.67 ERA through 43 innings (four starts, eight relief appearances) on the season for Texas.

ImpactMize had to be shut down for a bit due to a back issue cropping up, which was concerning since he's coming off back surgery (as well as Tommy John surgery). The right-hander has a shot to make it back late this season, but that probably won't happen if he has more setbacks.

ImpactThere is no further information from the Rangers, but Barlow will be out for at least the next two weeks. He has allowed two earned runs on four hits and one walk in 3.1 innings of relief this season at the MLB level.

Matt Vierling - Back injury forces IL stintVierling was placed on the 10-day injured list by the Tigers on Tuesday with lower back soreness, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.

ImpactVierling was a late scratch from Monday's lineup due to the injury and a day later he's now on the IL. He'll be eligible to return in early June but it's not clear at this point whether he'll be ready by then. Zach McKinstry could see more action in the outfield with Vierling out, although Kerry Carpenter (shoulder) is due back soon.
